University of Southern Indiana Men’s Track & Field junior Bastian Grau (Höchstadt, Germany) was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for the first weekly award of the 2017 outdoor season.
Competing against some of the country’s top runners, Grau earned a win in his heat of the 5,000-meters at the Stanford Invitational over the weekend. In a heat loaded with NCAA Division I runners, the junior defeated the field by nearly eight seconds, finishing with an NCAA II automatic qualifying time of 13 minutes, 57.56 seconds. The mark is currently the third fastest in NCAA II for the 2017 season.
Senior Noah Lutz (Evansville, Indiana) has the 20th fastest time in the country in the same event after a time of 14:38.36 at the Wash U Invitational. Teammate senior Chase Broughton (Marengo, Indiana) also competed in the 5,000-meters at Stanford, finishing in 14:47.50.
Grau earned two weekly conference awards during the indoor campaign, as did Broughton.
The Screaming Eagles returns to action this weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana competing in the Marian Knight Classic April 7-8
