Indianapolis – At the recommendation of his physician, Governor Mike Pence will undergo non-emergency outpatient surgery today at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital to address minor complications associated with his hernia surgery last week. He is expected to be discharged this evening and will recover at home following the surgery. The Governor had surgery Friday, August 14, to have a hernia repaired.

In advance of undergoing general anesthetic, Governor Mike Pence has taken action to temporarily transfer executive branch duties to Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann, pursuant to Article 5, Section 10 (c) of the Indiana Constitution, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The change of power, which has been routine in past administrations, is explained in a letter to Speaker of the House Brian Bosma and Senate President Pro Tem David Long. The letter in full can be found attached.

After the surgery is complete and the Governor has come out of anesthesia, he will sign a letter to Speaker Bosma and President Pro Tem Long explaining he will resume his executive branch duties. A media notice will be issued at this time.
