We’re thrilled to invite you to an upcoming event that promises to be an enriching and engaging experience – the Friends of Willard Library Annual Lecture.

Event Details:

Date: Monday, November 6, 2023

Time: 6:30 PM

Location: Browning Gallery, Lower Level, Willard Public Library

This event is not just an ordinary lecture; it’s a unique opportunity to travel back in time to the Prohibition Era in Evansville, a time of speakeasies and intrigue. The lecture, “Wide Open Evansville: Prohibition Era,” will be presented by the talented author, Erick Jones.

Erick Jones, the great-grandson of Evansville, Indiana Police Captain Andy Friedle, brings history to life through his debut book, “Wide Open Evansville.” His research dives deep into the captivating period when Indiana enforced prohibition while Kentucky, just across the Ohio River, did not. Evansville, with its rich German culture and brewing heritage, faced unique challenges during this era, earning a reputation for being “wide open.” The lecture will also explore the 1920 Evansville whiskey ring conspiracy, an event that left an indelible mark on the city.

About the Author: Erick Jones Erick’s personal connection to the era goes beyond his great-grandfather; he’s also the great-grandson of former Vanderburgh County sheriff’s deputy Jesse Jones, who later became a federal prohibition agent. Although he now resides in Ohio, Erick holds cherished memories of spending his summers with his grandparents in Evansville.

This lecture is free and open to the public, and we encourage you to invite your friends and family to join us for this enlightening evening.
