Evansville Bids Farewell to Author and Community Leader Mike Whicker

0
Evansville, IN — Mike Whicker, author of the renowned Erika Lehmann WWII spy series and a cherished Evansville community figure, has passed away.  His literary work highlighted the city’s role during the war and resonated with readers both locally and nationally. Whicker drew upon local history and his deep knowledge of WWII to craft the engaging historical fiction series.
Beyond his literary success, Whicker began his career as a plumber, later earning a degree in English Education. He taught English and Literature at F.J. Reitz High School, where he also coached for years and supported athletics as a member of Big Blue Boosters.
A dedicated community servant, Whicker played a pivotal role in securing the LST 325’s permanent location in Evansville, serving as the executive director of the LST 325 Memorial after its arrival. He was a member of Germania Maennerchor, served as Vanderburgh County Commissioner in 2007, and served several other boards and organizations.
Whicker’s contributions to the community, both as an educator and public servant, leave a legacy. His presence will be missed by many, but his work and influence will continue to inspire. Whicker is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandy, his five children – all who have followed Whicker’s legacy as public servants, and 15 grandchildren.
