$5 in Garages Otherwise It's a Free for All

Okays Deal for UE Basketball to play in downtown Arena

The Evansville Redevelopment Commission has adopted a $5 per car pay up front format at all City of Evansville parking garages for all evening and weekend events in the new Arena. It was pointed out that there are approximately 1,600 spaces in the 4 garages that will be available for spectators at Arena events. It was also reiterated that all of the on street parking and the “back 40” lot east of the Civic Center will remain free to people on a first come first served basis.

On the recommendation of arena project manager John Kish, the Evansville Redevelopment Commission voted unanimously to accept an contract that will bring the UE baskeball teams to the Arena for about $10,500 per game.

In other business a change order of over $30,000 associated with a portion of the downtown road reversal project was approved. This amounted to what Pat Keepes of the City of Evansville meticulously described as a 3.93% overrun. A portion of the overruns were due to specification incompatibility between the original project and the Arena itself with the Arena’s specification being followed at a higher price.

Gage was also represented at today’s meeting to report on the difference of appearance in plastic and canvas awnings when backlighting is used and to request to hire Kripe to evaluate the tuck pointing at the Innovation Pointe building. A field trip to get a visual field for the awnings was authorized by the ERC.

  1. Cheap at twice the price. It’s $18 minimum in Indy last time I went, and probably more now.

    • I don’t mind the $5 at all, I also don’t mind a healthy walk in the winter (except for what has been reported concerning clean sidewalks on Main Street).

I am looking forward to seeing the ticket price dropping for an Ace’s game. As noted by Mr. Kish, the parking fee was already included in the ticket costs. Soooooo… one would assume the cost for a ticket and a healthy walk will be cheaper by about a dollar and some change. But, we all know what assuming does.

  2. Wow, where is the outrage over these insane prices? Where is the public outcry over more money going to line someones pockets. It is almost like we live in a resonable area.

    • Come on man, $5 is more than reasonable and people know it. There will be 2,000 free spaces in the “back 40” and on the street for those who are willing to walk to save $5.

      • Correction: There are only 996 spaces in the “back 40” to begin with, and about 30 of them are used full time as overnight parking for municipal vehicles. But yes, $5 is rock bottom for downtown parking compared to Indy, St. Louis, Louisville, and Nashville.

  3. Questions. Who will work the garage booths collecting the fees on nights and weekends? Current City employees getting overtime or new City employees? How will security be provided in the evenings? EPD or private security? Who pays for all of these new costs? Sorry I missed the ERC meeting as all of this was likely discussed in great detail by that sage group.

    • I heard at least 25 EPD officers will be used in the downtown area for each Arena event.

      • At the End of the First budget cycle with the Arena open, it will be interesting to examine the extra EPD expenses for “Arena Protection”.
When the cost of “The John” is truly measured each year, It’s Overhead, anyway you want to count the dollars or what budget you put it in.

    • You need to form an LLC, load up on OPM (other people’s money), and lease Roberts so you can realize all your smoke dreams. Show us the money! And put it where your mouth is.

      • Blah, Blah Blah… And I also need to listen to you again to set me up a website don’t I? For someone who gives lectures on OPMs you sure are pretty familiar with using it yourself.
