Shortly after 2 a.m. this morning a worker at the Purina Nutritional facility at 2124 Lynch Road found one of his co-workers unresponsive and entangled in a man-lift. The worker immediately called 911 and the first arriving fire unit was there within minutes.
The man was identified as Newgene S. Pike, 43, of Evansville. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Six units from the Evansville Fire Department responded including 2 Rescue Squads and the Rope Rescue Team. The victim was trapped between the man-lift structure and the wall behind it. Part of the man-lift had to be disassembled to recover the victim, who was suspended approximately 20 feet above the floor. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
I hope his family is compensated.
The fire department and the police department always arrive ahead of the ambulance and get right to work. I have seen this happen at all kinds of emergencies. It is a shame and scary that medical response was removed from the EFD back in the eightys when Vanderveer gave it to Alexander then downhill from there. The firemen were and still qualified to do this job and free.
