ST. Louis, Mo. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball could not dig itself out of an early hole and lost to Maryville University, 15-8, Tuesday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. The Screaming Eagles are 11-11, this spring, while Maryville is 13-10 in 2022.
The Eagles found themselves in a large hole after five inning as the Saints built a 12-0 margin that included a nine-run fifth. USI started a comeback in the sixth with a five-run frame that included a grand slam by sophomore designated hitter Gavin McLarty (Buckner, Kentucky) as the Eagles shrank the gap to 12-5. The grand slam was McLarty’s first hit and home run of the season.
USI tried to close the gap with three more runs, including a solo home run by sophomore rightfielder Trent Robinson (Louisville, Indiana) in the eighth and a two-run double by junior second baseman Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) in the ninth that cut the deficit to 15-8. The seven run deficit would be as close as the Eagles would come as the Saints closed out the win and the regular season sweep.
Up Next for the Eagles:
USI opens the GLVC 2022 conference slate this weekend when it hosts a four-game series at the USI Baseball Field April 1-3. The series starts Friday with a 6 p.m. single game.
The Eagles trail all-time series with the Hawks, 48-41, after splitting six games last spring. USI lost three of four with Quincy at home during the regular season, but bounced back to win both meetings in the GLVC Tournament at Lindenwood University.
Quincy is 12-10 overall this spring, 3-1 in the GLVC, after taking three of four from the University of Illinois Springfield at home last weekend. The Hawks are 5-5 in their last 10 outings.
