EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana senior guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) blistered the nets for 32 points as the Screaming Eagles rocketed by the University of Illinois Springfield, 100-72, Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. The Screaming Eagles rise to 18-6 overall and 10-4 in the GLVC, while the Prairie Stars go to 13-12, 6-9 GLVC.
Stein missed only one field goal as he was nine-of-10 from the field, three-of-three from long range, before going 11-of-12 from the stripe. The 32 points pulls him to within nine of his 2,000th career point and becoming the third Eagle to reach that mark. Stephen Jackson (1983-87) holds the USI all-time record with 2,216 points, while former All-American and NCAA II Player of the Year Chris Bowles (1990-94) is second with 2,169 points.
Sophomore forward Emmanuel Little(Indianapolis, Indiana) led five additional Eagles in double-digits with 16 points. Senior forward Jacob Norman (Evansville, Indiana), who posted a season-high today, and senior guard/forward Nate Hansen (Evansville, Indiana) had 11 points each, while junior guard/forward Kobe Caldwell(Bowling Green, Kentucky) and sophomore guard Mateo Rivera (Indianapolis, Indiana) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points each.
During the first half, the Eagles led by one point, 20-19, at 11:41 before exploding on a 14-0 run that put them in command, 34-19. The lead would expand to as many as 18 points, 48-30, and USI took a 17-point margin into halftime, 53-36.
USI extended the margin to 19 points, 59-40, to start the second half when Illinois Springfield’s offense made a move and pulled to with five points, 72-67, with 7:35 to play. The Eagles offensive kicked back into gear and finished the 100-72 victory with a 28-5 surge to close out the victory.
The 100 points marked the first time since 2015-16 that USI has reached the century mark in two-straight contests.
The second half of USI’s four-game homestand starts Thursday when the Eagles host Lewis University Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and the University of Indianapolis Saturday at 3:15 p.m. for Senior Day.
USI lost the first meeting with the Lewis Flyers in Romeoville, Illinois, 79-69, but leads the series, 46-26 overall and 38-26 in the GLVC, since the beginning of the match-ups in 1980-81. The Eagles, who have a 30-10 lead in the series at the PAC, were led by Stein, who dropped in 22 points in the loss last Saturday.
USI won the first meeting of the year with UIndy, 85-70, in Indianapolis and leads the all-time series with UIndy, 57-22 overall and 53-21 in the GLVC, since the start of the series in 1972-73. The Eagles, who lead the series at the PAC, 33-5, was led in the road win by Caldwell, who had 18 points, and Norman, who had 11 rebounds.
