Drive Safe and Sober this Fourth of July

The Evansville-Vanderburgh County Traffic Safety Partnership, the Governor’s Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) would like to remind all Indiana motorists to celebrate the Fourth of July responsibly by driving safe and sober.Sheriff David Wedding stated, “This Fourth of July family and friends will come together and celebrate Independence Day. With your mind on the celebrations, you may be tempted to ignore or overlook a friend who is about to drive away intoxicated. Please don’t rely on someone else to say something. Only you can prevent a tragedy.” Sheriff Wedding added, “If you know you will be drinking, make plans now to get a safe ride home.”

During the 2014 July Fourth period from July 3 through July 7 there were over 1,400 traffic collisions in Indiana. Of those, at least 96 were alcohol-related. In total, six (6) Hoosiers lost their lives as the direct result of an impaired driver.

Evansville Police Chief Billy Bolin stated, “Over the years both of our agencies have tried our best to get the message out that drinking and driving destroys lives. Education is only effective with those drivers willing to heed the message.” Chief Bolin explained, “Unfortunately for those motorists who still elect to drive impaired, an arrest for DUI is the only way to prevent them from killing themselves or an innocent person.”

Vanderburgh County sheriff’s deputies and Evansville police officers will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers and will arrest anyone caught driving impaired. If you have any doubt about your sobriety, please do not get behind the wheel. If you do choose to drive impaired, expect to be arrested. No warnings. No excuses.

Funding for local impaired driving enforcement is provided by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA).
