YESTERYEAR: DELTA QUEEN

1

Before the legendary Delta Queen cruised the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, the sternwheel steamboat ferried passengers up and down the California coast. Christened in 1927, the Delta Queen was acquired by a Cincinnati company in 1946 after the boat served a brief stint in the U. S. Navy during World War II. It was then overhauled and returned to its original use as an overnight passenger boat. The Delta Queen was a familiar sight at Dress Plaza for many years, where this image shows it docked in the late 1950s. In 1980, Mayor Michael Vandeveer proclaimed July 15 “Delta Queen Day in Evansville.”

  1. If this city administration had half a brain it would work feverishly to make Evansville an embarkation port for one or more of the remaining paddle wheelers. It is truly a “no brainer”.
