Councilman Al Lindsey to Decline Invitation to Vanderburgh County Democrat Party Meeting

City Councilman Al Lindsey

After careful consideration I have decided that I will not be attending the meeting tonight at the Vanderburgh County Democrat Party Headquarters. As a member of the Evansville City Council from the 6th Ward, my job is to represent the best interest of my constituents when it comes to casting my one vote on each piece of City of Evansville business that comes before the City Council.

The Sunshine Laws of the State of Indiana make it clear that no more than 5 members of a 9 member City Council can be at the same place at the same time when city business is being discussed outside of an official public meeting. I feel that tonight’s meeting is one that has potential of having official City of Evansville business brought up by non-council members in attendance to push one agenda or another. I have thought this one over and given the fact that all 8 of the Democrats on the City Council have been invited and that there is open public vocal support among local Democrat Party leadership for both the downtown convention hotel and the Johnson Controls projects, I do not see how these subjects will not be pushed for discussion by non-council members in attendance. For this reason I want no part of being put in a situation where Sunshine Laws could be violated.

I do invite any and all of my constituents from the 6th Ward to let me know what you think about the City of Evansville subsidizing a hotel to the tune of $37.5 Million and spending $46 Million to replace the water meters. I am your public servant and will cast my vote for the will of the people of the 6th Ward who hired me to do this job in the first place. There is no private agenda that means more to me than the will of the people of the 6th Ward and this city.

Al Lindsey, Evansville City Councilman, 6th Ward

  1. Way to go, nothing good will come of this anyway. The dem central committee cut their own throat when they backed Weinie over the voice of the registered dem voters. The sorry state of the city is because of the entrenched leaches who would cut anybodies throat to keep from having a real job. Independant voters need independant candidates.

  2. I am from the 6th ward and you are doing the correct thing , you will not be in violation of any thing

    • jbyrd, no doubt about that. Al Lindsey, again, is right as rain. Keep up the good work. We can always count on Dan McGinn and Al Lindsey. At the other end, Mosby and Weaver are simply hopeless.

  3. From the 6th, keep up the good work Councilman. You are doing what you should be again. Besides, in my educated opinion twoface Jack McNeely was in on setting you up before, and I know for fact he would burn you, just to pleasure Messy. McNeely and the rest of the turncoat Democan’s or Republicats, “chose”. They have not chosen wisely, and have not honored the wishes of the party faithful. That says it all to me, THEY HAVE NO HONOR, and should all resign and walk away, forever, so we can put our great party back together. And we all need to remember and preach across this great state, Weinzapfel was the one that thought he was to great to be challenged, and I will make it a misssion in life to see anyone elected that will beat him.

  4. Thanks Mr. Lindsey for doing the right thing by staying away from a back room meeting with The Union Boss, Mosby and Weaver. They are nothing but self serving trouble makers.

You make me I’m that I voted for you.

  5. You making the right choice by not going to this gathering hosted by demo party chair Jack McNeely.

Everybody knows this McNeely guy is the puppet of the past Mayor.

He was also a big supporter of the present Mayor.

Keep up the good work Al.

    • Isn’t that the building that Kunkel got for $10? Did Weinzapfel put the party headquarters there to payola his favorite downtown developer? Is this where the old folks that were in the McCurdy were herded off to? Too cronyism and political drama for me to attend. Lets leave this meeting for the Council members who are puppets of Weinzapfel.

  6. This is what all the dem council should do. Sunshine law will definitely be violated at this meeting. Great job councilman Lindsey. 6th ward should be proud! As being a 6th ward voter I am very proud to have you representing us!

  7. It is pretty clear which side wants to keep the Democrat Party torn apart. A party caucus is legal. Lindsey’s clear ignorance on the rules doesn’t surprise me considering his consistent flaunting of them. Not living in the city and drinking on duty prove that. The party needs to work together to win back the offices we have lost. Lindsey/Adams and the various failed candidates with them need to get with the program and Chairman McNeely needs to lay down the law. Tearing the party apart is over!

    • Barb, how soon you forget that McNeely brokered the deal that created Mayor Winnecke and tore the party apart. The last time this guy put his foot down it was to endorse a Republican for Mayor. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid Barb. McNeely is for the machine that has kept Evansville down for years along with his posse of mercenaries like Weinzapfel & Winnecke.

      • The party was fractured when the Democrat Central Committee openly worked against their primary winner Rick Davis. They also worked against Mr. Lindsey.

    • this isn’t a party caucus or I’d have been invited. this is a meeting of the city council members

      • Other than the Democrat City council members, minus only the principled Al Lindsey, does anyone know who is supposed to be present with Chairman McNeely?

    • Is this a legitimate caucus with Party business being conducted? If it’s not an official caucus, that loophole would not apply. Furthermore, Party caucuses disallow non-Party members from attending the caucus, which can only be composed of party Precinct Committeemen.

      • as a committeeman I have not been invited nor has any other committeeperson I have talked to. BTW I love the amp Brad

        • Awesome! Really glad to hear it, Sir! Also, it was a pleasure finding so much in common with a member of the opposing Party. In person conversations bring out the best in both sides, I usually find. We should do it again sometime. 😀

I am not sure which “loophole” you are referring to, but a quorum of council members may not discuss anything that is likely to come before the council for a vote. Those type of discussions are to take place at the public meetings of the common council.

Five (5) democrats showing up at this meeting would preclude them from discussing anything currently in front of the council, or likely to in front of the council in the future. Also, five members in any combination of political affiliation is likewise prohibited.

    • Its not a caucus, its a special meeting for others to persuade the council members to vote how they want! A Caucus is a vote, not a damn meeting where weinzapfel and mcneely push their views on everyone else.

      • How would you have any idea what the meeting is about, did McNeely call you and ask your input.

        • Not personally but like you, your speculating as is most everyone on here. Anytime you get Mcneely and Weinzapfel and their cronies together, they are pushing their views on everyone else and want the official votes to go the way they want, instead of the way that would benefit the taxpayers the most. Nothing new or have you been under a rock for years???

  8. I think by now everyone understands the Machiavellian nature of Jonathan Weinzapfel.

In my estimation Weinzapfel is much more suited to a profession as an attorney than one as a politician, if one believes, as I do, that government should operate in the full view of those being governed.

  9. There is nothing new about this latest meeting of elected democrats, it is just Jonathan Weinzapfel doing what he does.

    Evansville Courier&Press:

Davis criticized Weinzapfel for the April 1, 2008, unadvertised meeting of city and county officials during which they discussed not renewing the county’s 2009 local homestead credit.

The meeting was held in Weinzapfel’s office, and the mayor took the brunt of public criticism when taxpayers discovered the credit was not renewed. The decision was reversed at Weinzapfel’s urging.

Davis also slammed the practice of having Democratic City Council members meet in Weinzapfel’s office for caucuses before City Council meetings. The practice is legal according to the state’s open meeting laws, but Davis said it “violates the spirit of open-door laws.”
