Councilman Al Lindsey Opposes Raises for Select City Employees

City Councilman Al Lindsey

Citing a down economy and a need to look at the big picture as opposed to just giving raises to few administration favorites, Evansville City Councilman from the 6th Ward, Al Lindsey today announced his opposition to these raises going through.

“The City Council should not be put into a position of having to vote 10 people a raise when the system needs to be changed” said Councilman Lindsey this morning. “I urge Councilman Friend to rescind his resolution calling for a vote of approval” continued Lindsey. Councilman Lindsey made it clear that he will vote no on the 10 raises in the event that it comes before the City Council for vote.

Councilman Lindsey’s Statement:

It is my position that pay increases for a designated elite group of 10 people when the country is in a recession and local unemployment is too high is irresponsible and should not be the business of the City Council. Our job on the City Council is to address the big problems facing Evansville as opposed to rubber stamping a chosen few people’s raises. If Evansville is not competitive then it needs to be taken care of on behalf of all of the City employees and not just a few hand picked ones. The way to do that is to look into just how our system needs to be changed so that all of the employees of the City have an opportunity to be paid more as their performance on the job improves. Handing raises out to just a few is not fair and does not solve the problems we have. I urge my fellow members of the Evansville City Council to vote no should this actually come to a vote. That is what I am going to do.

  1. You damm right he is.

Now you understand why Missy, Weaver and Robinson wanted to silence him.

Al is becoming the key political leader in his own right.

It’s obvious that Al Lindsey is a common man with a common message!

  2. Thanks Councilman Linsey for taking a correct stand on this issue.

Many of my Westside friends told me to sit back and watch you. They predicted that you would become a voice to reckon with. My friend were right!

I’m real proud of you Mr. Lindsey!

  3. How does Councilman John Friend now feel about this issue now?
He, Connie Robinson, Russ LLoyd, Jr.(the Mayor’s bookkeeper) and the Mayor has really caused a political fire storm concerning this back room political deal to take care of their political buddies

Just another Homestead Tax Credit type deal behind close doors.

  4. I thought that Mr. Lindsey was wrong on the drinking issue, but he is totally correct here.

These pay raises, so soon in the administration’s tenure, appear to be either payback or ill thought out. Each of the recipients of the Mayor’s largesse, knew the remuneration for their particular position when they accepted them less than seven months ago. To reward a select few, while the bulk of the city’s employees suffer is wrong, ill conceived and blatantly disregarding the financial siutation of the city, county and country!

  5. Giving huge pay increases at the beginning of a Mayoral term for select politicos is taking cronyism to a whole new level.

An overall job classification and compensation study should be conducted by an objective third party contractor. Maintaining a job classification/compensation system for the exclusive benefit of the Mayor’s political appointments is not good government.

Socrates did not believe that justice meant “doing good to your friends and harm to your enemies”; however, politicians hold this as sound principle.

  6. More Snegal from Team Winneke, more thoughtfullness and common sense from Councilman Lindsey. Al works for the citizens, Team Winneke works for the machine.

    • What do you expect from Winnecke. The machine put him in his job. Turncoat Connie’s job is to crack the whip on his pansy ass.

      • Hard to disagree, but also Mr. Lindsey continues to surprise with his good judgement.

  7. Thank you mr. Lindsey ,,, hopefully the other council members will snap out of their rubber stamp mode ,,, my guess this has been part of a back room deal

  8. You might want to check your facts before you go shooting off your mouth. Several of the employees have been employed much longer than 6 months and by different admins., so that kind of blows your cronyism accusation out of the water now, doesn’t it? Elite? Don’t even go there. What moral right do you and the rest of the council members have to tell business owners and PRIVATE clubs on how they should run their places of business? (i.e. smoking ban) Who’s the elitist?

  9. Al Lindsey what abig surprize.

I’m extremely impressed on your position on this issue.

To be honest i worked my a– off to get you beat during the fall election. I’m now glad you got elected because you have shown me that you are indeed a common man with a common touch.

Oh, you bet you sweet a– the next time I shall be going door to door to get you re-elected.

  10. Now… Does everyone see why Missy Mosby tried so hard so many times to get Al Lindsey out of her sight! AL LINDSEY will do the right thing if everybody gives him a chance… Thank you AGAIN Councilman Lindsey for standing up for what you believe in and for the people!

  11. Darn, I was told that Al Lindsey was a dumb idiot by one of the Mayors puppets over drinks.

Now it looks like the Mayor and his puppet are idiots!

    Great job Councilman Lindsey!

  12. Go get ’em Al. Finally someone is standing up for the citizens that voted them in and is not there just to fatten up their cronies pockets!! Keep standing tall Councilman Al Lindsey!!!

  13. I’m really proud of your stance on this issue.

I forgive you about the “Maingate Bar” problem.

Your the first Democratic elected official I have brag on in years.

On this issue, Al Lindsey rules!

    • Agreed. I had huge Executive Inn sized doubts about Al Lindsey after his “mellow yellow” fiasco with Weaver and Mosby at Maingate. It appeared he could be as goofy as Weaver and Mosby. However, Mr. Lindsey got off the canvas and fought for the taxpayers. Mr. Lindsey through action has proven over the past many months to be a true representative of the people, along with the always reliable Dan McGinn. Well done Mr. Lindsey and keep up the excellent work. Dissapointed in John Friend on the proposed raises, as Mr. Friend is usually a representative of the people.

  14. I would suggest that the organizational structure of the City of Evansville be reviewed. I would suspect that some of these ten positions as well as others, could and should be eliminated or the positions downgraded.

    • I agree. Thankfully reorganizing city and county government will result in elimination of some positions and we can finally start to trim some fat. Thank God!
