Conservative Fiscal Discipline Pays Off for Indiana
by Indiana State Senator, Vaneta Becker
Years of fiscally conservative leadership in Indiana have resulted in the passage of consistently balanced state budgets. These budgets have included healthy reserves to protect the state from potential economic downturns and eliminated debt that Hoosier taxpayers would ultimately have to pay.
This continued forethought benefited Hoosiers last year when our “rainy day” reserve funds helped our state weather the COVID-19 pandemic. In this session, the Indiana General Assembly passed the state’s next two-year budget that will eliminate $1 billion in taxpayer-funded state debt and pay for a number of projects upfront as opposed to paying back bonds at a later date.
In addition, we have allocated $100 million in our budget to be put toward mental health and substance abuse recovery initiatives. The budget also appropriates $500 million for the Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative for businesses and communities feeling the impacts of the pandemic, giving Main Streets the confidence to reopen better than ever.
These investments will continue to push Indiana forward and ensure state dollars – all of which were first earned by hardworking Hoosiers – are put to good use to make our state a better place to live, work and raise a family.
