A customer checks out the features of a Coldspot electric refrigerator at the Sears store in downtown Evansville in 1938. The model was popular because it was larger but less expensive than other brands, and during the Great Depression, affordability was important to most households. The local Sunbeam Electrical Manufacturing Company produced units for the refrigerator that Sears sold throughout the country for years. Sunbeam later merged with Seeger Refrigerators, which became Whirlpool in the 1950s;Â by 1977, the Sears Kenmore brand had replaced Coldspot.
