CCO’s First Endorsement: Evansville’s Richard Mourdock

The Congress of the United States does not have any of the rules that typical workplaces have with respect to mandatory retirement, competency, education, or even honesty. These are things that are left up to the people who vote to decide. This year’s Republican primary for the nomination to campaign to be a United States Senator from Indiana is a race which epitomizes the need for judgment in the voting booth.

Longtime Indiana Senator Richard Lugar has served Indiana well and has given his life to public service at all levels of Indiana government. For those years of dedication the City County Observer thanks and honors Senator Lugar.

There is a choice that has to be made on May 8th and that choice for Hoosier Republicans is between Senator Lugar and Evansville’s favorite son and Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock. Republicans have to choose which Richard to send into the general election against the Democrat challenger.

In days gone by candidates Lugar and Mourdock may have had little difference in their positions on issues? Both men are in their comfort zone within the Republican Party.

Mourdock did not enter politics until later in life and then he did so at the urging of local officials who convinced him to run for Vanderburgh County Commissioner after a distinguished career in the energy field as a geologist. Educated in the sciences and without the baggage or the war chest that a career in politics bestows Mourdock was recruited by Governor Daniels to run for Treasurer and then by the state leaders to enter the race for United States Senator.

Mourdock made national news in 2009 by suing the Obama Administration on behalf of public pensioners for giving preference to the UAW over bondholders in the Detroit bailout. It was the courage that he exhibited in that action that spurned a movement in the GOP to encourage Mourdock to aspire to higher office.

During Mourdock’s rise from private business, Senator Lugar has become more and more entrenched until today he is one of the faces of the Washington establishment. His support of the bank bailouts and his votes to confirm President Obama’s nominations for the Supreme Court so irked traditional Republicans and members of the tea party that change has been embraced within the Indiana Republican party with respect to this Senate seat.

For his courage, his history in private business, his pragmatic yet practical demeanor, his tireless energy, and yes for his love of Evansville and Vanderburgh County, the City County Observer endorses Treasurer Richard Mourdock for the Republican nomination for United States Senator from Indiana. This is a change that’s time is now.

WHAT A OUTSTANDING CHOICE FOR YOUR FIRST POLITICAL ENDORSEMENT!

  2. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH “TEA BAGGER”–GREAT ENDORSEMENT!

CCO YOU ARE FINALLY COMING OF AGE!

  3. WHAT A KIND AND WELL THROUGHT OUT POLITICAL ENDORSEMENT.

I HAVE RECEIVED MANY PHONE CALLS TODAY ABOUT THIS ENDORSEMENT AND FRANKLY THE CCO HAVE RECEIVED MANY POSITIVE COMMENTS ON THIS ENDORSEMENT FROM MY FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES ALIKE.

HOW CAN WE ADVERTISE WITH THE CCO IN ORDER TO HELP SUPPORT THIS PUBLICATION?

  4. IT LOOK LIKE IT’S TIME ABOUT TO SERVE THE TEA!

I WOULD HAD BET MY NEXT PAY CHECK THAT THE CCO WOULD HAD SUPPORTED SENATOR LUGAR AND NOT MR.MOURDOCK. WHAT AN OBJECTIVE AND MASTERFUL ENDORSEMENT.

I NOW AWAIT THE COURIER AND PRESS COMMENTS ON THIS RACE!

  5. Like it or not this political endorsement will generate much needed votes from the independents and the undecided votes of this area.

I read the City County Observer about a couple of times and enjoy it ok. Your now on my must read daily list.

Oh,a friend ask to see if you are looking for any new investors? It’s time for the Evansville Courier to get some competition!

  6. i like the way you treated Mr. Lugar in this endorsement with your kind words. Indeed Mr. Lugar served us well and now it’s time for a change!

Vote for Richard Mourdock as your next United States Senator from Indiana!

    Oh, great job CCO!

  7. I agree with the CCO on this one.

Please send this edition on to your friends so they can see how a political endorsement should be written.

while i’m at it–please send a copy to the Courier and Press it might improve their political editioral writting skills.

  8. Governor Daniels says he likes Lugar for “what he can do” and “not what he has done”. Whoa!! Senator Lugar has 36 years in the Senate and he is 80 years old. If he has not done it by now, why would anybody expect him to do the right thing in his next term?

Time for a change. We need people in Congress that deal with today’s top issues–the economy and creating and maintaining good paying jobs.

    VOTE for Mourdock!!

  9. Great first endorsement. The National Rifle Association has also endorsed Mourdock . He has my support and vote. …

  10. My opinion of Lugar lies in part with the fact that he has no concept of the US Constitution. I am especially referring the “advice and concent” and the separation of powers.

Lugar has stated to me in writing, over 20 or more years that he believes a President has the right to name his choice to the Supreme Court of the United States as well as to lesser courts. How does Lugar’s rubber stamping the President square with advice and concent?

The Constitution set up three branches of the federal government. This separation of powers was designed for any two branches of government to act as a check on the dictates of the third. Lugar does not understand this concept.

One would think, after 30 years, he would understand. He doesn’t! I do not believe Lugar could pass a high school exam on the understanding of our Constitution.

    _____________

I can understand our Indiana Constitution stating that someone “living” out of state does not lose his residency by virtue of that service for the United States, but how does that give Lugar’s wife the same priviledge? In my opinion, she has forfeited her Indiana residency by her out of state residency.

  11. I am not so sure endorsing candidates is a good idea for CCO, even though I agree with your endorsement.

  12. If Lugar loses the election, it will be a terrible setback for Indiana, the United States and all countries interested in a safer, more stable world.

Lugar is a statesman. Murdock — a losing career political hack for most of his working life — just happens finally to be in the right place at the right time.

John Hostettler, a true principled conservative with a proven track record, would have been a much better option for Republicans looking to punish Lugar for their perceived slights.

Still, I’m betting Murdock will ride into the Senate mainly because he has no real competition from the other side. So, Indiana will soon be represented in the Senate by Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

Indiana is already a donor state, meaning that we pay more in taxes than we receive. Once Lugar is gone, tea partiers can rejoice in the fact that we will receive even less for our taxes than before.

But don’t worry, states like Texas and Alaska will continue to pay lower taxes and reap more federal dollars.

As we get closer to the primary, we’re gonna see even more SuperPAC money dumped into this race. Who is paying for those ads? The same shadowy interests who will have Murdock in their back pocket.

Be careful what you wish for, sheeple!

    • Lugar served well, but his time has come and gone. He is like a nice old Grandpa who is full of old stories and not on top of his game. Mourdock is a badly needed fresh horse. Mourdock being from Vanderburgh County, our County, is a really big plus.

    • Jeff said, “Indiana is already a donor state, meaning that we pay more in taxes than we receive. Once Lugar is gone, tea partiers can rejoice in the fact that we will receive even less for our taxes than before.

This is the worse reason ever to vote for someone. Because they have some clout is typically the problem with those candidates. In the end they lose touch with their home states and reality.

  13. one time thru would have been enough for this endorsement, even the C&P only gives their opinion once. Either you convinced me the first time or I’m probably not changing my mind.

  14. I can remember seeing Lugar on the Sunday morning talking-head shows during the first years of his first term. To me Dick looked and acted like a Jimmy Carter clone. He and Carter were and still are as goofy as they can possibly be. We should have shown Dick the door decades ago, just as we showed Jimmy the door in 1980. Dumping Lugar is long overdue.

  15. That does it for me. If Dr. John is for dumping Lugar, then I’m pulling a Republican ballot tomorrow morning at the closest public library, and voting for Richard Lugar.
