Edward Payne Jr. was arrested on the morning of August 13th for theft of auto parts and criminal mischief. Payne has a prior conviction for theft. Payne is accused of cutting off the catalytic converter of a vehicle that belonged to a business in Evansville.

On August 13th, just before 3:00 a.m., Evansville Police Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of N Green River Rd. in reference to a suspicious circumstance. A witness reported that he heard sounds of a saw and could see a subject dressed in black on the back lot of a car dealership. Officers located an SUV that was parked on the back lot of the business that had the catalytic converter cut off. Officers located the suspect, who was identified as Edward Payne Jr., hiding on the business lot. A handheld saw and an automobile jack were recovered near Payne. Payne was taken into custody and booked into the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center.

Payne was arrested in December 2019 for cutting off and stealing a catalytic converter from a work vehicle at another business in Evansville. Payne was convicted for that theft in February 2021.

  1. The judges need to stop smacking thieves on the hand and letting them go to do their evil deeds again.

  2. Mr. Payne apparently didn’t avail himself of the break the judge gave him for his previous (failed) attempt at converter cutting. They look askance at folks who not only don’t learn but flaunt their stupidity. Maybe they’ll hammer down a sentence that will get his attention this time. Being nice to him didn’t work. At least take his saw away from him.
