IS IT TRUE we have just been told by extremely reliable sources that the push by the Mayor to get fast track approval of the new downtown Convention Hotel shall be put on hold for at least 40 days?  …that the reason given for this action is to allow City Council to do the proper vetting of this multi- million dollar project before  they  invest our hard earned tax dollars?  …this is a developing story and we shall keep you posted as things progress?

  1. Looks like the Mayor is finally being held accountable.

Thanks City Council for finally making this guy accountable.

    • Can’t agree with you more Blue Badge. This Mayor has no idea of a value of a dollar.

If City Council continue to allow him to spend, spend we shall one day be another Detroit.

Can’t wait till we vote him out of office and put in a real conservative in his place.

    • Councilman Friend is putting up a lot of bluster but in the end he’ll vote for this, just like he did for the Johnson Controls contract and many other.

One tap on the should from Jack Mcneely telling hime to vote for it or face a primary challenge and he’ll fold like a lawn chair.

      • This is so sad and yet so true.

Someone mentioned the Mayor not knowing the value of a dollar; I suspect that’s because he was a banker.

        • He’s a marketing guy who worked for a bank. He is neither a CFO, a CEO, or an accountant.

      • After seeing just how much Winnecke is like Obama I do not expect there will be a Republican mayor in Evansville again for 30 years. This guy is an utter joke when it comes to financial ability. Detroit and Chicago must be Winnecke’s role models.

  2. The fire fighters on my shift are extremely pleased with City Council action concerning this issue. To bad they didn’t do similar when it came to making the right decision concerning cleaning our gear in a timely manner.

Oh, best known secret around here is it would be wise for the media to check and see how much toxic chemical does the city have stored on the stage at Mesker? Also the media needs to check and see if the neighbors could be harms way/

    • I agree that the firefighters are being short-changed in their efforts to have the city purchase the heavy duty washers and dryers.

Has the city purchased bullet-proof vests for the EPD? What is the difference? We are talking about the first responders in both cases.

      Protect our first responders.

      • I have misplaced the status of the heavy washer for EFD discussion. Has it been approved? What happened to the 3rd party vendor suggestion for cleaning the suits?

  3. Mayor and Rumplebeancounter are in deep with the State Board for at least the next 40 days. Rumor in the Civic Center is that nothing balances and that another Disclaimer of Opinion is very likely

  4. 74 million dollars for the hotel. That’s a lot of money where I come from. How much of that is the developers money?

      • No dreams involved. The total cost of the hotel project is $74 million. The city planning to contribute $37.5 million taxpayer dollars.

      • Hotel = 45 million, Garage = 5.3 million, Walkways = 2.5 million. Storage 6.7 miiion, Centre = 1 million infrastructure = 2 miilion Interest during construction, Lawyers, underwrites, other professionals = 7 million Luxury Appartments = 15 million TOTAL = 82 MILLION!!!!!!

        • Oh, Metermaid, you forget one thing, Lloyd Winnecke trash pick up = Priceless!!!!

          • Maybe he should be picking up the trash off the Mesker stage instead… If that IS indeed trash.

  5. The Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation:

On page 3C of the legal section in today’s C&P you will see a list of “Payments in excess of $10,000.00 to vendors in 2012.

    Old National Bank……………………….$6,700,450.

    ONB Insurance…………………………..$ 859,985.

JWF Specialty Company (Sub. of ONB INS.)…..$ 684,585.

    Total………………………………….$8,245,020.

It is difficult to believe that Zeimer Stayman Weitzel and Shoulders never sent in a bill other than their retainer, $57,904., that was larger than $10,000. If we tallied up all of their billing for 2012 I am sure the amount would surprise everyone.

Does any of the money we send the EVSC ever make it to “INSTRUCTION”?

    “Holy bait&switch, …BigPappa!”
How the true cost of this convention hotel dwarfs the cost represented by former mayor Weinzapfel, back in 2011.

    Excerpts: (Courierpress story)
“Steps away from the site of the proposed hotel near the Ford Center, Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel announced that a memorandum of understanding had been reached between city negotiators and Kunkel to build the $33 million hotel.
The total value of the incentive package is $8 million, with $1 million put toward the sale of the land where the hotel would be built. Another $3.5 million would be a forgivable loan. Up to $3.5 million more would come in the form of loan with an interest rate of 5 percent.”

  7. “The total project cost of a hotel, apartment tower, a restaurant and surrounding infrastructure is to be about $74 million, with the public investment of about $37.5 million, Winnecke said”
    Todays C&P.
If my math is correct that comes to over $250,000 a room for a 250 room hotel! Is this a good price?

    • Isn’t that about the same price per renovated apartment at the old Safe House (now Vision 1505)?

    • Evidently it’s $45M for the hotel. That works out to $180,000/room, only 80% over market price not 250%.
      🙂

      • If the hotel is 45 mil. drop the retail space and section 8 apartments for the cronies and the taxpayer shouldn’t have to put up any money. There is infinate space available downtown for those projects to be completed by private enterprize.

  8. The City Council will go along with the mayor – just watch and see. They always do!

    • You are probably right. Even Friend, Riley, and Lindsay rolled over on the 9 – 0 Johnson Controls vote. Either the unions got to them or the really believe in Winnecke. They always huff and puff but they never blow the house down. Political posturing like these three do is worse than just being a suck up like Mosby and Weaver are.

      • I’d like to hear SBR’s explanation of why she voted for the Johnson Control’s deal. She worked so hard for the taxpayers to expose the EarthCare deal as a sham and claims she is working practically non-stop to get the truth on the Auditgate scandal. Why nothing on JCI, Stephanie?

        • Fair question, Big Pappa. She had a watered-down explanation that she was swayed by being able to use the ATT fiber network (lame). The union vote is the better explanation, I guess.
