With 178 trafficking victims identified in Indiana in 2016, we must provide more resources for our educators to detect the warning signs of this modern-day slavery.
I authored a proposal for a new law that would help our educators identify the signs of human trafficking after receiving a one-hour in-service training every two years. This training will help teach educators how to identify and report human trafficking.
Under current law, a school corporation’s disciplinary rules regarding bullying must prohibit bullying through computers and this legislation would add acts of bullying with cell phones to the definition of cyberbullying as well.
The Department of Education, the State Board of Education and school corporations would also maintain links on their websites to provide information about bullying and human trafficking for parents and teachers to easily access.
