City Councilwoman for Evansville’s Third Ward, Stephanie Brinkerhoff-Riley, announced  to the City County Observer earlier today that she will not seek a second term in office. Brinkerhoff-Riley was elected in November of 2011 and her term ends December 31, 2015.
When asked for the basis of her decision, Brinkerhoff-Riley stated, “Over the last few months my priorities have changed, as well as my personal and professional goals. I look forward to finishing projects related to the City’s Taxi Ordinance; a county-wide blight elimination program; an ordinance creating preference for residents and veterans in City hiring; and an ordinance that prefers city-based businesses for vendor services. I’ve enjoyed the last three years, accomplished quite a few goals and learned a tremendous amount about municipal law.â€
When ask if she will be a candidate for a future political office she declined to answer our pointed question.

I think the Councilwoman made a good decision for herself and her family, as she spends a great deal of time fulfilling her duties. I’m not sure where the citizens will look for someone who will work so hard for them, instead of the special interests, though. Perhaps the best decision would be to seek a full time public office in the future.

I think it’s a sickness.
-we are losing a REALLY interested, insightful, active, INTELLIGENT member of local government (boy is there a scarcity of them). I am not the kind of person who would question her motives (it’s not really mysterious, the vicious vortex of local politics/personal interest has attempted to crucify her repeatedly and it’s bound to be tiresome) I thank her for everything she has sought to do for us ALL-all of the time, and talent she has expended to protect the public from some pretty dubious dealings.
I wish her well in all things.
Stephanie has been seriously ill in the past, and I pray that is NOT the case here-in any event, she has young children, and has used time for us that belongs to her family. When the time comes, and in the meantime, all I can say is Thank YOU Stephanie-I know you sacrificed a lot to work for us, I appreciate it. But take good care of yourself, your life, and family is more important.

Agreed. I want to see her do whatever she needs to do in order to build her own strength back up and do what is best for her family. I am simply hoping she is taking a hiatus from public service, and not ending doing it. She loves representing the best interests of the people who don’t have much of a voice, both on Council and in the courtroom, but she loves her family most of all.
Every family hits rough patches, and the local busybodies did everything they could to exacerbate hers. Politics is a rough business at its best, and Evansville politics is a snake pit. The really sad thing that happened to Stephanie and her family is that the most self-interested and eely politicians used the busybodies to slur a woman who admits to having a very common condition and is working hard to recover. The real irony in all of that is that many of the politicians( and/or their spouses) who led the attack have the same challenge she is facing, but they aren’t admitting it or fighting it.
I wish the best for this wonderfully bright, talented, generous woman and her amazing, beautiful family.
I respect Mrs. Brinkerhoff-Riley’s decision, swimming against the tide of Dirty and corrupt Politics in Evansville would wear down anyone, –at this juncture saving One’s self is the wise and right decision.
Considering a 13% participation rate by the Voters in Evansville, — why martyr yourself?

Stephanie, thank you for your service; and especially for exposing the SBOA Whitewash of the 2012 City of Evansville audit. You distinguished yourself by taking a stand.
She did more for the people than any public servant in my memory. A lot of ’em will talk but she actually pushed the button and took the shots from the entrenched machiniÅz. She also felt the spiteful weight of a dying newspaper striking out at her and threats that would have made lesser people wilt. It sounds like through it all she kept her priorities straight.
I really hope she is not done with public service, she defines the term.

Dying newspaper? Dying, on its last legs, yellow journalism rag. It won’t be long until it’s down to 3 days a week, and then fold completely. Don’t believe me? Just ask Tom Tuley.
I think when they seemed uninterested in finding a legitimate editor for it this last time around everybody knew Scripps had written it off. It has failed in what should be its mission, to keep the people informed. It has become the house organ for the Winnecke administration.
It does not surprise me in the least that SBR is opting out of this bullshit political climate. SBR dared to confront fraud, and the machine does not like the risk of being exposed. Thank you for your incredible bravery in recording the State Board cover up of the Audit. Your colleagues were midgets in your midst while you tried to shine the rightful light.
Please take a few years off, rest up, and come back in a big way in 2019 as our best, and first of many we hope , female Mayor !
I see that the Courier and Press is still showing the same disparaging photo of SBR in their paper today. How day they show that photo over and over gain. SBR’s mouth is crooked as she is caught at an awkward moment in time.
I’m sure that the C&P has better more photogentic pictures of SBR in their files to use but they continue to choose this one picture that’s really not flattering at all as SBR’s mouth is contorged in a awkward position. Her mouth is crooked in this particular photo. How would the photographer or the Paper’s photo editor or Editor like to have a similar bad picture of them plasted on the front page of the news for all to see. Maybe the CCO will publish such a picture of Tim if we get one of him look awkward at some public event in the future. Maybe we can make a Facebook Page of funny awkward Pictures of the Photographer who took this particular photo of SBR.
This is one of the main reasons that I will never again buy any news paper subscriptions from the Evansville Courier and Press until they change the way they run that paper. It’s disgusting the way Tim is running this news paper. He is just a horrible person to allow that pictures to be plastered on the front page of the newspaper. He is not a nice person IMHO. Is Tim Ethridge a vindictive person? Is he wrong to publish such crap and use this particular stock photo of SBR everything his paper writes a story about SBR? I think so.
I really wish that people would boycott the Evansville Courier and Press until they stop this awful practice of bashing this lady. It’s a shame what they did to her after she caught them covering up the poor accounting at the city. And for the SBA to cover up the city’s lack of standard and approved accounting practices is a shame.
I wish we have some more people with integrity that were running for City Council instead of a few of the knuckle heads that we have on the council now. It’s no wonder the city has such a huge debt load and they haven’t even got a plan to get the job down for fishing the sewers that meets with USEPA’s approval. IE a plan that would actually work. Turning bee slough into a wetland is not going to work. The cement pond has some do do it it Granny. Better run get Jed and tell Jethrow to bring a scoop and pail and some bleach. The cement pond is in need of fixin (sic).
Agreed. The CP apparently sees as one of its last missions the job of corrupting the word newspaper. ‘Newspaper’ no longer applies to that twisted rag. It is now the very antithesis of a newspaper. It is not surprising they ran that picture again, it would have been surprising if they hadn’t.
If you’re looking for journalistic integrity, don’t waste your time perusing the Evansville C&P. I’m close to 70 and don’t remember ever seeing any there, with the exception of Susan Collins.
We haven’t had a news paper for a long time. Now we are loosing a good lady from City Council.
Mrs Riley doesn’t give a fiddler’s damn what she looks like-she wants results. I wish her the best-some of these people who get their shits n giggles wreaking chaos on their political “enemies” need to recall that we are ALL mortal. All these people whose interests they are SUPPOSED to be serving? Those people work, eat sleep, raise their kids, pay their bills, hope for something better, get sick (thanks for all the nastiness in the Ohio-this region is a red hot area for cancer of ALL kinds) and they die here. It’s not a game, it’s about people.
Maybe stop trying so hard at filling one’s pockets, and actually become decent human beings (all of them WERE human beings once, really-some of then still ARE-so it’s possible..) It could happen-
I’ve known some since they/we were kids, and I have to disagree about them having been humans once. Some of the second and third generation “leaders” seem to be missing the “humanity” gene. They came from good, hard-working stock, but life has been too easy for the younger generations. If they were dropped off without any money in a big city where their names mean nothing, they would either become decent people, criminals, or corpses. I think the decent people would be in the minority. A sense of entitlement is a hard thing to shed.

The above statement is NOT a “death threat”. It not is even a WISH for the death of anyone. It is merely a prediction about the nature of some people who are involved in local government. Nobody with a guilty conscience needs to call the police. I will not harm you physically, but if I can help take your ill-gotten power away at the ballot box or in a court room, I’m on board for that.

Okay okay please spare the Poor Photo bloviations! She cant take a “good” photo as shes not Photogenic to save her life! Now all of you seem to be “worshipers” of this poor excuse of a Public Servant but I for one am Not! She secretly recorded a meeting then came out in public stating that the numbers were all wrong only to find she was running her mouth about things she had NO Idea about as when the report came out All was fine! Yea she got cleared good thing for her big deal! Her drunken rantings were deplorable along with Threatening Lives of Local Residents and wishing them dead! Her BS apology was all I am a victim and lawyer bull crap that didn’t pass the sniff test! Good Riddance! Do us a bigger Favor Ms Councilwoman and just step down NOW!
We may not agree on some things, but we’re 100% on the Courier-rag. I cancelled when I saw the whitewash job they did on the stupid siting for the Med School.
