What Are They Protesting? No Buy – Economic Blackout Today

Today, some Americans will abstain from shopping in observance of a 24-hour “Economic Blackout.” Participants are told, “Do not make any purchases. Do not shop online or in-store. No Amazon, No Walmart, No Best Buy. Nowhere!” No fast food, no gas, and don’t even think about using a credit card.

But what is the great cause for which we will bring commerce to a grinding halt for the day? The answer depends on whose Facebook page you’re looking at. Some people believe the protest is meant to send a signal about consumerism and our need to always buy more. Others are convinced that the day is supposed to be a slap to evil, greedy big retailers. Still others are boycotting based on DEI policies, and some are protesting President Trump.

How can the protest be taken seriously if there is no clear purpose? It’s just a bunch of different groups promoting different agendas with no clear path to declare success.

The protest was originally organized by The People’s Union USA, a movement that opposes corporate greed, including rising prices, low wages, and job outsourcing, while these companies report record profits.

After the single-day spending pause, People’s Union plans week-long protests against specific retailers, including Amazon Mar. 7-14, Nestlé Mar. 21-28 and Walmart Apr. 7-13.

In an unaffiliated protest, Black faith leaders are calling for a 40-day “fast” or boycott of Target to protest its dialing back DEI initiatives to run during Lent starting on Ash Wednesday, Mar. 5.

So, how will I mark the occasion of the Economic Blackout? You’ll find me celebrating my birthday with a big spending spree. I’ll use my credit cards at several stores, then I’ll go out for a big dinner. I highly recommend a day of retail therapy for the day today!

    1. Perhaps its to show corporate America , people are watching ” and they are angry. Trust me , boycotts and such actions work. Retailers are paying attention. Not much is gained if 100-200 protest but if 500,000-1,000,000 citizens act, they will notice. Because its a free country and your birthday, enjoy. We’ll make a statement for you

      • You’ll not be making a statement for Johnny or I or the majority of Americans. It IS a free country, so do as you please as long as it doesn’t hurt or impede others.

        • I included in my comment “its a free country”. YOU write “majority of Americans”. Mmm. I believe inflation, energy, and grocery prices are affecting all of us. Also, where do you buy your eggs…milk…meat? So we’ll boycott for you and yours

          • Sorry, Donald, me and mine are self-sufficient. We need not others to fight our economic battles as we are well armed with personal resolve and fortitude. Boycotts seem to be of little use in lowering anything except the public opinion of boycotts.

    2. Had a great day shopping also knocked out a couple drinks for Johnny’s birthday……….Donald just a suggestion build a tree house and live in it year round………Save us….lower our electric bill ………..
