Evansville, IN – October 14, 2024 – Explore Evansville has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study to explore the development of a new cross-country course in the region.  This initiative is in response to growing interest in outdoor sports and recreation and the need for a premier course, as the current host site, Angel Mounds, will no longer be available for this sporting event after 2025.

The study will evaluate potential locations, course designs, and the economic benefits a new cross-country facility could bring to the community.  It will also explore opportunities to expand adventure tourism in the area, while considering how future developments could integrate with existing trail networks.  The aim is to create an amenity that not only attracts visitors for events but also provides lasting value for residents.

“Evansville has a strong history of hosting cross-country events, and we are committed to ensuring that tradition continues,” said Alexis Berggren, President & CEO of Explore Evansville.  “A dedicated course would help strengthen our city as a regional leader in sports tourism, attracting new competitions, visitors, and economic opportunities.  At the same time, we want to ensure it benefits the local community and ties into our broader outdoor recreation offerings.”

The feasibility study, which is being led by American Structurepoint, will also involve Legacy Sports Group as part of the project team, providing their expertise as an athletic facility planning consultant.  Input from key stakeholders, including local cross-country experts, recreational enthusiasts, and sports event organizers, will also be integral to the study.  Public engagement will play a crucial role in ensuring the course meets the needs of both athletes and the wider community.

With the support of community partners, Explore Evansville is optimistic that the study will identify opportunities to develop a world-class cross-country course while also boosting tourism and enhancing connectivity with existing trail systems.
