The Point-in-Time (PIT) Count is a once-a-year count of individuals and families in shelters and places not meant for human habitation, usually happening during the last 10 days in January. This year, the count happened on January 24th in 65 out of 91 counties of the Indiana Balance of State (Marion County completes their own count).

This year there were more than 400 volunteers who helped in the count. Volunteers doing street outreach were able to identify 1,138 individuals and families sleeping in places not meant for human habitation on January 24th. Volunteers provided meals, resources, and human fellowship. They connected people with healthcare providers, mental health resources, substance use, and even helped them be moved into housing.

In 2024, there were 4,584 individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the Indiana Balance of State. This is a 4% increase compared to 2023. Over the coming weeks we will highlight noteworthy findings and trends from this year’s PIT count.
