USI Blasts William Jewell 4-0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer blasted William Jewell College, 4-0, and won its third-straight match Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles go to 5-4-2 overall and 3-4-1 GLVC, while the Cardinals are 0-11-0, 0-9-0 GLVC.

The Eagles built a big lead, 3-0, by the end of the first 45 minutes after outshooting the Cardinals, 10-0. USI sophomore midfielder Jill DiTusa (St. Charles, Illinois) got USI going by posting her fourth goal of the season to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 12:12.

DiTusa was assisted on the play senior forwards Katlyn Andres (Louisville, Kentucky) and Keely Thompson (Terre Haute, Indiana).

USI freshman midfielder Avery Schone (Galena, Ohio) gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead by the end of the half with her third and fourth goal of the season. Schone got her first goal of the match at 31:30 off pass from sophomore forward Morgan Beyer (Rossford, Ohio) and freshman midfield Savannah Grubbs (Hamilton, Ohio) for the 2-0 lead.

Schone extend the USI lead to 3-0 with her second goal at 41:31, knocking in a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Madison Crawford (O’Fallon, Missouri).

In the second half, USI maintained the 3-0 lead through the first 35 minutes until DiTusa knocked in her second goal of the match and team-high fifth of the season. She put away a pass from Beyer, who posted her second assist of the match.

Between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper Maya Etienne (Midland, Michigan) evened her season record at 3-3-1 with the victory. Etienne faced a total of three shots making two saves to earn her fourth save of the season.

The shutout also is the 25th of Etienne’s career, putting her three away from becoming the USI all-time leader. Angie Gries holds the USI shutout record, compiling 27.5 between 1996 and 1999.

UPCOMING FOR THE EAGLES:
USI hits the road next weekend, making visits to Drury University and Southwest Baptist University. The Eagles are slated to play Drury at 10 a.m. Friday in Springfield, Missouri, while matching up with SBU at noon October 17 in Bolivar, Missouri.

Drury is 10-1-0 overall and a GLVC-best 8-0-0 in the GLVC after posting a 2-0 victory at Lindenwood University today. The Panthers lead the all-time series with the Eagles, 13-3-2, after taking last spring’s match-up, 2-0. The series is tied over the last five matches, 2-2-1.

SBU, which plays the University of Indianapolis Friday before hosting the Eagles, saw its record go to 2-7-1 overall and 2-6-0 GLVC after falling to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 4-0, on the road this afternoon. USI leads the all-time series with SBU, 2-0-0, since the Bearcats joined the GLVC in 2019.
