USI Runners Open Season Friday With Stegemoller Classic

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Men’s and Women’s Cross Country opens its 2021 season Friday when it hosts the Stegemoller Classic at Angel Mounds. The women’s 4K race begins at 5:50 p.m., while the men’s 6K is scheduled for a 6:20 p.m. start time.

Friday’s meet is the only regular-season home meet for the Screaming Eagles, who also host the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships November 6 at Angel Mounds. USI will be running split squads to compete against Kaskaskia Community College Friday, while its top tier competitors gear up for the Redbird Invite on September 17 in Normal, Illinois.

USI’s split squads Friday will be divided into a red team and a blue team. Competing for the women’s red team Friday are freshmen Katelyn Ahart (Owensboro, Kentucky), Trina Brokering(New Baden, Illinois), Kati Hoerig (Prospect, Kentucky), Shelby Livingston (Jasper, Indiana), Emma Thompson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) and Mallory Wittmer (Evansville, Indiana). The women’s blue squad consists of freshmen Emily Armstrong (Corydon, Indiana), Paige Brummett (Bloomington, Indiana), Carmen Rodriguez (Olney, Illinois) and Katie Winkler (Santa Claus, Indiana) as well as sophomores Aubrie Deal (Noblesville, Indiana) and Delaynie Grove (Vincennes, Indiana).

USI’s men on the red team Friday include senior Markus Poulsen (Gilleleje, Denmark); sophomores Garrett Ardis (Lawrenceburg, Indiana), Nick Dombroski (Noblesville, Indiana) and Will Sims (Camby, Indiana); and freshmen Corbin Butts (Lamar, Indiana), Carson Kleinhelter (Franklin, Indiana) and Brady Terry (Philpot, Kentucky). USI’s blue team will consist of senior Michael DeMeyer (Olney, Illinois); sophomores Todd Baxter (Edwardsville, Illinois) and Ross Ellis (Greenville, Indiana); and freshmen Dylan Bland (Holland, Indiana), Elliott Buechlein(Lamar, Indiana), Mason Moore (Bloomington, Indiana) and Joshua Myers (Greensburg, Indiana).

Admission to the Stegemoller Classic is $5 for the general public, while USI students are admitted free of charge.

USI, whose women are ranked No. 5 and men No. 14 in their respective U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association Coaches’ Polls, are looking to reclaim its position atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2021. The Eagles saw their 15-year run of GLVC titles come to an end with a second-place finish at the 2020 GLVC Championships, while the women finished third at last season’s conference championships after winning the 2019 title.

In addition to the Stegemoller Classic and next week’s Redbird Invite, USI is scheduled to compete at the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers Invitational October 9, while the GLVC Championships are October 23 in Romeoville, Illinois.
