Trump, First Lady Test Positive For Covid-19

The announcement comes shortly after the president said he and the first lady were in the “quarantine process” following senior aide Hope Hicks’ positive test.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for the coronavirus, he announced on Twitter early Friday.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” he tweeted.

The president will continue to work from the residence of the White House and a scheduled rally in Orlando, Florida, was canceled.

Hope Hicks, one of the president’s closest senior advisers, tested positive for the virus on Thursday, making her the highest-profile member of the administration to contract the virus who is in frequent contact with Trump and other top officials.

Trump, 74, told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday after Hicks’ positive test that he and the first lady, 50, were tested after Hicks tested positive and later tweeted they were starting the “quarantine process.”

The president has held campaign rallies around the country for months, many of which are outdoors but some have been indoors. The most recent one was Wednesday night in Minnesota and he also traveled to New Jersey on Thursday for a fundraiser.

Hicks along with several top White House and campaign advisers traveled with the president to Cleveland for Tuesday’s debate against Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

The president has drawn sharp criticism for his handling of the pandemic and downplaying its threat.

Also, his administration has sowed confusion over wearing a mask to slow the spread of Covid-19 and public health experts have said this mixed messaging hampered the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and even led to preventable deaths.

After months of public criticism, the president tweeted a photo of himself wearing a mask, writing in July, “many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can’t socially distance.” Then in August, Trump urged Americans to cover their faces in public as a “patriotic” thing to do.

The president has insisted he “didn’t lie” to the American public about the severity of coronavirus, despite having told veteran journalist Bob Woodward in March that he’d been intentionally downplaying the virus’s potential impact.

“What I said is we have to be calm. We can’t be panicked,” Trump told reporters in September after being pressed on his coronavirus response.

After a Trump rally in Tulsa in June, former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain tested positive for the virus and later died. At that same rally, roughly eight White House staffers, including Secret Service personnel, tested positive for the virus. One of President Trump’s personal valets, who works in the West Wing serving the president his meals, among other duties, tested positive for the coronavirus in May.

U.S. health officials continue to monitor for coronavirus cases in the United States. As of Oct. 1, more than 7 million cases have been confirmed in the U.S., based on NBC News’ count. There have been more than 205,000 deaths.

          Biden Now Says the China Travel Ban He Opposed Should Have Happened Sooner

          Last week, Joe Biden flip-flopped on President Trump’s travel ban with China, coming out in support of it after calling it “hysterical xenophobia” for two months.

          Now, he’s trying to blame Trump for not implementing the ban sooner.

          “You got to go faster than slower. And we started off awfully slow,” Biden said on ABC News’ This Week. “He indicated that I complimented him on — on dealing with China. Well, you know, 45 nations had already moved to keep — block China’s personnel from being able to come to the United States before the president moved,” Biden claimed. “So, it’s just — it’s about pace. It’s about — it’s about the urgency. And I don’t think there’s been enough of it, urgency.”

          But, Biden’s claim that 45 other nations had already blocked Chinese nationals from coming into their countries is simply not true. President Trump’s travel ban with China was put in place on January 31, which was a month and a half before the World Health Organization (WHO) even classified the coronavirus as a pandemic. It’s also worth noting here that the WHO officially opposes travel bans, and Trump was widely criticized for his ban. Eventually, other countries followed suit, because experts admitted that they worked for slowing down the spread of the virus and saved lives in the United States. Biden advisor Ron Klain said the idea of a travel ban at the time was “premature.”

          Biden is clearly struggling to get his message out—he’s relied on plagiarizing Trump coronavirus response so far, and now he’s trying to rewrite history.

            Even if he avoids a serious illness, he will be forced off the campaign trail for a considerable length of time and the questions about his handling of the pandemic and his personal behavior in relation to it will intensify.

            Trump is paying the price for “playing down” the pandemic and the country is paying the price for his failed pandemic response.

      The U.S. economy added 661,000 jobs in September and the unemployment rate fell to 7.9 percent, indicating that the economy continued to add jobs even as coronavirus infections rose across many states.

      Economists had forecast an addition of around 800,0000 jobs and a decline in the unemployment rate to 8.2 percent from 8.4 percent last month. So Friday’s figures missed on job creation but beat on the unemployment rate.

      “The easy part of the labor market recovery is largely behind us now. A lot of jobs still came back in September but the pace of improvement is clearly slowing. The sobering statistic here is that 36% of unemployed are now classed as permanent job losers, up from 14% in May,” said Brian Coulton, Fitch Chief Economist.

      There was a huge decline in education employment and government jobs. Government employment declined by 216,000 in September. Employment in local government education fell by 231,000 and state government education fell by 49,000. A decrease of 34,000 in federal government was driven by a decline in the number of temporary Census 2020 workers.

      Manufacturing added 66,000 jobs over the month, the fifth straight monthly gain. That is a more than a respectable showing for this sector and well above forecasts for a gain of 33,000. Durable goods accounted for about two-thirds of the gain, led by motor vehicles and parts and machinery. Despite gains over the past 5 months, employment in manufacturing is 647,000 below February’s level.

      In another positive sign for the economy, the average workweek for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 0.1 hour to 34.7 hours in September. In manufacturing, the workweek rose by 0.2 hour to 40.2 hours, and overtime decreased by 0.1 hour to 2.9 hours. The average workweek for production and nonsupervisory employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 0.1 hour to 34.1 hours….

      • Trump had already been trailing in the polls to Joseph R. Biden Jr., in part because of his mishandling of a virus that has unsettled the day-to-day lives of voters for over six months.

        He compounded his difficulties by disregarding and belittling the basic precautions, such as wearing a mask, that his health advisers were urging Americans to take to protect themselves.

        It’s hard to imagine this doesn’t end Trump’s hopes of re-election after his flaunting of obvious precautions.

    Democrat Response to Coronavirus: End Trump’s Travel Bans on China, Iran

    House and Senate Democrats are responding to the coronavirus outbreak in the United States by supporting measures to effectively strip President Trump of his authority to impose travel bans to protect American citizens.

    While Trump has implemented travel bans on China and Iran — two of the most coronavirus-affected nations in the world — House Democrats are looking to roll back the president’s authority to enact travel bans from regions of the world.

    The “No Ban Act,” introduced by Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) and co-sponsored by 219 House Democrats, would have prevented Trump from immediately implementing a travel ban on China once the outbreak of the coronavirus spread past its origins of Wuhan.

    Instead, the No Ban Act would have allowed travelers from Wuhan to continue to arrive in the U.S. while the president received guidance from Congress…

    The effort to end America’s ability to implement travel bans comes as the number of coronavirus cases hits 1,107 nationwide, including 32 deaths.

    Democrats’ fight to keep U.S. borders open to the world during the spread of the coronavirus was echoed by 2020 Democrat presidential primary candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) this week when he explicitly said he would not close America’s borders to protect Americans from the coronavirus.

  8. Trump knew Hope Hicks had tested positive with COVID on Thursday morning, yet still held a fundraiser Thursday night in New Jersey with no masks worn.

    He had been traveling with Hope Hicks all week yet flagrantly ignored CDC guidelines.
    Not a single person in the Trump camp, including the Trump family, wore a mask at the debate on Tuesday. The whole family has a consistent disregard for rules.

    No telling how many people Trump came in contact with this week who will test positive.
