..this is an area of coverage that has been failing for a long long time whether it was bought and paid for reporting to promote a downtown arena being built and failing to even question the financial projections made by the consulting group that said the Ford Center would be cash flow positive from day one?…it is now about 3,500 days since the Ford Center opened and it still has not paid its own way from an operations perspective and it sure as heck has not made a single payment on the $127.5 Million loan floated to build it?…playing sycophant for the arena, the downtown hotel, the McCurdy, the ball parks, and even Robert’s Park was an abject failure in financial journalism?…that set of projects when the mainstream newspaper abdicated its responsibility to be cheerleaders for former Mayor Weinzapfel and current Mayor Winnecke destroyed the credibility built by a century or excellence?…the reality is that there is little of value remaining at the Courier and Press as reflected by the 63 cents share price of the parent company Gannett (GCI)?
IS IT TRUE that the 63 cent stock price at Monday bottom means that the entire Gannett Company with it’s 260 newspapers is only valued at $83 million all inclusive?…that this organization has a debt of over a billion dollars at 11.5% interest on a company that has a market cap of $83 million?…this does not bode well for future capital raises or paying off the debt?…the stark reality is that newspapers across the country are victims of large investment groups that have cut talent, alienated advertisers, and produced irrelevant biased narratives?…at this rate there may be no newspapers still in print in the United States in 10 years?…the value of the Gannett Company at this stock price divides out to just over $300,000 per newspaper?…these papers are to the point that there is little or no financial reason for them to exist?…the only things of value may be the archival records of the cities that have hosted them for over a century in many places?…the historical record of pictures, old articles and columns are worth more than the zero dollars that the day to day operations are cash flowing?…if you think fake news and biased posts are a problem now, just wait until there is no news at all?…we are nearly at that point?
IS IT TRUEÂ we are hearing rumors that the new Gannett publishing Corp. may be considering selling off some of their less financially productive publications? Â …if this happens, we are told that a group of local well-heeled and business savvy investors may be interested in salvaging the once proud and powerful Evansville Courier and Press at the scaled value of the paper? …we are told that this investment group has the creative and marketing experiences, literary and business skills to run the Evansville Courier and Press like it hasn’t been run in many years? Â …we are also told if this group is successful in purchasing the Evansville Courier and Press the days of offering daily printed newspapers will cease except for offering an outstanding non-partisan and unbiased Sunday community newspaper at an affordable price? Â …we are also told that the time and energy of this group will provide current daily news on the internet at no cost to the subscribers? Â …we are told if this group of investors are successful they will put together an outstanding editorial board made up of literary authors with a newspaper background, well-known (male and female) entrepreneurs, known community leaders, a local banker and attorney and the former Editor of the City-County Observer Joe Wallace?
IS IT TRUE that allowing public employees to be able to retire at full or near full pay when the private taxpayers who toil to pay the taxes that cover their pensions is a situation that may not be tolerated for much longer?.
IS IT TRUE that allowing public employees to be able to retire at full or near full pay when the private taxpayers who toil to pay the taxes that cover their pensions is a situation that may not be tolerated for much longer?
IS IT TRUEÂ several years ago a group of American veterans who deal with some of the most debilitating mental anguish has called upon the State of Indiana to legalize medicinal marijuana? …some Veterans feel that legalizing medicinal marijuana and decriminalizing small amounts may just cut back on the overcrowding problem at the Vanderburgh County jail and VA hospitals ?…the veterans group also feel that putting someone who possessed a small amount of marijuana in jail at $50,000 per year cost to the taxpayers is bordering on insane?
IS IT TRUE that the City of Evansville will raise our taxes in 2020?…we wonder how on earth can a city that has ZERO population growth and minimal wage growth feel that they can collect more tax money from its huddled masses than it did the year before?
IS IT TRUE that a late great professor from the University of Evansville once said, “come to the revolution all of this $%#! will cease? the obsession with fun and game spending is what has led the sheep to this unsustainable abyss?
IS IT TRUE we are told that several patrons of Ellis Park are hoping that the new owners of Ellis Park (Saratoga Gaming of New York) will invest the money to professional pave the parking lot, install proper exterior security lighting and signage, install a first-class exterior digital on-premise sign located next to the highway? … they also are hoping that the new owners will also decide to update the interior decor, remodeled the restrooms, correct the issues with the heating and air conditioning, fix the leaking roof and damaged ceiling tiles in the main Club House building and the Sky Theater area?  …a couple of patrons also told us that is would very easy for Ellis to round all the old that artifacts in storage and laying around the historical track to create a ‘Horse Racing Museum?”  …if done correctly this ‘Horse Racing Museum” would attract new visitors to visit Ellis Park?
