Today is Constitution Day:
The United States Constitution was signed by our Founding Fathers on the this day in 1787. The US Constitution and the Bill of Rights (passed by Congress in 1789) are the greatest political documents of all time. The freedom and prosperity we enjoy today are a direct result of the protection of personal liberties and limits imposed on the power of government laid out in these documents. We should thank our founders for their wisdom in the drafting of these documents and vigorously defend the ideals contained within. The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the land, and the Bill of Rights is not a Bill of Suggestions.

After going on the road to Evansville in 2018, we’ll be returning to Indiana’s capital city next year for our biennial convention. And we’ll be bringing 1,800 Hoosier Republicans like you from across Indiana with us!
At next year’s convention, delegates will be voting to nominate our party’s candidate for lieutenant governor and attorney general. Official activities at the Indiana Republican State Convention will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2020, at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. Convention delegates, who will be elected from each county during the May 2020 primary, will vote to nominate next year’s Republican candidates for lieutenant governor and attorney general. Activities for delegates will also be planned for Friday, June 19.
More details about the 2020 Indiana Republican Party State Convention will be released in the coming months.

Local farms eligible for assistance after heavy rain, flooding
(from 09/13/19 News Update)
Hoosier farmers are no strangers to working hard and adapting to the weather, but 2019 has been especially difficult. Earlier this year, many across the state grappled with heavy rains and flooding, which caused delays during planting season and damage to property.
Farmers in our area may now qualify to receive federal assistance if they show at least a 30% loss in crop production or a physical loss to livestock, livestock products, real estate or other property. If approved, farmers can borrow up to 100% of production or physical losses for a maximum amount of $500,000. Those with existing Farm Service Agency loans who are unable to make payments may also be eligible to have certain payments deferred.
Click here to learn more about FSA’s Emergency Farm Loans. The deadline to apply is April 29, 2020.

Sullivan invites non-traditional female students to apply for the POWER Scholarship (from 09/13/19 post by A. Kern)
State Rep. Holli Sullivan encourages non-traditional female students to apply for the POWER Caucus Scholarship to further their education and career aspirations. Women who are returning to school after a hiatus, changing careers, and seeking advancement in their careers or work lives, as well as stay-at-home moms entering the workplace who are in need of additional education and training, can earn a scholarship of $750 to put toward their education.
“Through this scholarship, non-traditional female students can receive financial help as they further their education,” Sullivan said. “Obtaining higher education credentials can open doors and we want hard-working Hoosiers to have opportunities to meet their career goals and aspirations, regardless of their age, family structure or previous work experience.”
Sullivan said there will be 18 scholarships awarded – two per congressional district. Scholarships are given to women who are residents of the state of Indiana and who are pursuing their educational endeavors in the state.
The primary selection criteria to be used by the committee selecting the scholarship winners will be financial need, personal vision, service to the community and future plans. Scholarships will be awarded at a ceremony in February.
To fill out an application, go to www.inpowercaucus.org/powerscholarship/. The application deadline is October 1.

National Recovery Month (from 09/13/19 News Update)
This month marks the 30th anniversary of National Recovery Month, a time designated to create awareness of mental and substance use disorders as well as celebrate those who’ve recovered from addiction. This year’s theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger.”
For several years, the General Assembly has passed measures to combat drug abuse and provide accessible treatment options for those struggling with addiction. For example, we have passed laws requiring controlled substance prescribers to participate in ongoing opioid education every two years and created a grant program to establish comprehensive addiction recovery centers throughout the state.

Preventing Vaping Among Teens (from 09/13/19 News Update)
The use of vaping devices has quickly become a national health crisis, having increased over 300% in Indiana since 2012. New reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention link vaping to more than 200 cases of respiratory illnesses nationwide, including at least 24 in Indiana. Recently, the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) confirmed the state’s first death that is linked to vaping.
To address these alarming statistics, Indiana is launching a three-pronged strategy to reduce vaping among Hoosier youth. The ISDH plans to increase awareness of the risks associated with e-cigarettes through an educational toolkit for schools, parents and students. Along with this, the ISDH will also launch a youth-focused text-to-quit program and a statewide public awareness campaign focusing on both the prevention and cessation of vaping.
I am alarmed by the growing number of Hoosiers who vape, especially our teens, and I hope these efforts will play a part in overcoming this public health concern.

Americans of all backgrounds are experiencing economic success in the Trump economy:

The strong Trump economy has created an environment where job opportunities are plenty and Americans are lifted out of poverty. Read Whitehouse News Release HERE.
“As Governor, I support free and fair trade that works for Hoosiers. After more than a quarter century, a reexamination of NAFTA is the prudent thing to do. The Trump administration worked diligently with Mexico and Canada to forge a new, modern trilateral agreement that will work for all three countries. The USMCA is an improvement on what worked in NAFTA and also addresses issues of economic fairness and adds provisions for issues that didn’t exist in 1993. USMCA provides certainty and stability while also expanding markets for Hoosier-made products.”
