We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?
IS IT TRUE that our Ellis Park “Moles ” just informed us that as of yesterday there has been a change in the role of executive leadership at this historic race track?  …as of yesterday, Jeff INMAN assumed the responsibilities as General Manager of Ellis Park?
IS IT TRUE we posted the following comment in the City-County Observer on September 10, 2019?  …we posted “IS IT TRUE we were just informed by a credible source that a Harrison High School student was arrested yesterday? …he was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun while at school?  …this is a developing story”?
IS IT TRUE some of our readers find it interesting that members of the mainstream media didn’t immediately inform the general public about this serious security breach at Harrison High School?
IS IT TRUE yesterday we received the following press release from the EPD Media Relations Director,  Sergeant Jason Cullum?  …Sergeant Cullen stated the following: “Evansville Police arrested a 14-year-old high school student on weapons charges on September 9th. A Harrison High School employee contacted police about a recently enrolled student possibly being in possession of a handgun. There were no claims of any threats being made by the student, only that he had a gun.”  “An EPD officer, working with school administrators, immediately removed the student from class and investigated the complaint. During the investigation, the officer found a small-caliber handgun in the student’s pocket. The student was taken into custody without incident.”  “He was placed in a secure youth holding facility on charges of possession of a firearm at school and possession of a firearm by a child.”  “The Evansville Police Department and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation view student safety as a top priority. The ongoing safety partnership between the two organizations resulted in a serious situation being resolved in a professional and timely manner.”
IS IT TRUE some of our readers wonder why the officials at EVSC hasn’t sent out a press release explaining why this security breach happened at Harrison High School?
IS IT TRUE we give five (5) cheers to members of the Evansville Police Department for resolving this potentially dangerous situation without conflict?
“IS IT TRUE we been told that the downtown EID (Economic Improvement District) 2020 budget proposes a $10,000 salary increase for the Executive Director? …we hope whoever prepared this budget made a typing mistake? ..we wonder what funding source is this guy salary coming from?  …we also wonder who are the members of the EID (Economic Improvement District) Board Of Directors?

    IS IT TRUE the Tropicana Sportsbook was supposed to open last Thursday but screw-ups by the local casino management with submittals to the Indiana Gaming Commission meant the gaming license wasn’t issued?

    IS IT TRUE that many local gamblers were anticipating the opening of the Sportsbook at the casino last Thursday so they could get their pre-season NFL bets laid down? With the screw-up by casino management these sports bettors had to scramble to get their pre-season bets in place at the French Lick casino. Local sports bettors were not happy and let William Hill employees know of their unhappiness and the owners of Tropicana are not happy with local management’s handling of the issue.

    IS IT TRUE the owners of the local Tropicana casino are tired of hearing complaints regarding how local casino management is treating casino players and how poorly the casino is being maintained and as a result have scheduled a trip to Evansville to address these issues and resolve these “problems”.

    IS IT TRUE the local Tropicana casino has realized the Ellis Park horse track casino will most likely impact their bottom line significantly and, as such, you can expect to see the local casino to be sold in the next year?

  2. Any comment from the EVSC about the Harrison student arrested in school with a loaded pistol?? It is high time to adopt the
    trained volunteer teachers quickly armed from hidden gun safes like many school districts are doing throughout Indiana. There in no nonpolitical reason to deny students and teachers this additional level of protection.

    INDIANAPOLIS – All teachers authorized to carry guns in school would be forced to first undergo a personality screening and take firearms training under a bill that passed the Senate 32-14 on Tuesday.

    School districts already can allow teachers to carry under state law. But House Bill 1253 goes another step and requires 38 hours of specialized weapons training to do so, as well as recurring training each year.

    The personality inventory is meant to weed out teachers or staffers who might not have the right temperament to carry a firearm in school.

    “A vote against this bill is a vote for allowing teachers to carry guns in school without proper training,” said Sen. Chris Garten, R-Charlestown.

    But Democrats focused on rethinking whether to allow guns in schools at all. At least three districts have authorized guns in schools, including Jay County.

    “There should never be a gun in a classroom, never,” said Sen. Greg Taylor, D-Indianapolis. “This is a bad bill. We are going to be on the wrong side of history.”

    Sen. J.D. Ford, D-Indianapolis, asked his colleagues to think about the possibility of a student overpowering a teacher and wrestling the gun away. Or teachers having to shoot students they have taught all year.

    Several Democrats said not enough has been done on mental health and access to guns by youth.

    Six Republicans joined Democrats to oppose the measure. All northeast Indiana senators voted yes.

    The bill now goes to conference committee, because the House author doesn’t support the training mandate.

    The Senate also approved a second bill Tuesday that would allow guns to be carried at churches that are connected to schools. Currently, state law prohibits this. The bill allows the owner of the property to decide whether guns are allowed.

    House Bill 1651 also strengthens current provisions allowing police to take guns away from those considered to be dangerous.

    And the state’s four-year firearms permit would expand to five years, with a more stringent initial background check. But Hoosiers with this permit would be exempt from background checks during the five-year period when purchasing from a gun dealer. The cost of that license also is being eliminated.

    That measure passed 36-10 and likely heads to conference committee. All area senators supported it.

  4. WC, spot on! The EVSC should follow the lead of the Jay County school corporation. See article below when they implemented trained teachers with gun safe access after sending a survey to students and parents asking whether the district’s plan as presented moved school safety in the right direction. Of the 109 respondents — mostly students and parents — 97 percent said it did. The school board approved the new policy eight months later in October, then installed the safes earlier this year.. The EVSC students and faculty deserve this cutting edge proactive protection that may deter a shooter in the first place, not more “E is for everyone” stickers.

    Parent Jennifer Langekamp said she believes most parents are supportive of the plan. She said she is grateful for the “proactive approach.”

    “With our superintendent’s military background, I have no doubt that he will make sure everyone is properly trained and educated for all situations, including the students,” she said. “As far as the actual guns in schools, I believe not only will it make a shooter situation possibly end before it begins but also will hinder many from even trying knowing that the school is fully prepared.”

    Teachers whom IndyStar spoke to said they hadn’t heard concerns from students, even when the district started doing random searches using metal detectors….
