IS IT TRUE another Evansville athlete has accepted the opportunity to play basketball for an elite program?…incoming senior JaQuan Lyle of Bosse High School has signed a letter of intent to play for Coach Rick Pitino and continue wearing the red and black at the NCAA Champion University of Louisville Cardinals?…it will be good for local fans to be able to take the short two hour drive to the YUM Center to see JaQuan play as many did when Evansville Memorial’s Kyle Kuric played for the Cards?…those who wish to get tickets had better get on the list soon as the YUM Center sells out for every UL game and sometimes even for the Lady Cards who were the NCAA runner-up this year?
IS IT TRUE that the government of Vanderburgh County is broke and is being forced to consider all sorts of cuts to eliminate a $2 Million shortfall in their budget?…the County Council grudgingly admitted last night that layoffs and program cuts will be necessary if an additional $2 Million is not found soon?…there is a rainy day fund that has been set aside for emergencies but the Council is intelligent enough to know that the reason for the $2 Million shortfall has nothing to do with disasters or unforeseen spending requirements due to acts of God or nature?…this is an operational shortfall and while it may be a struggle to balance the budget it is the right thing to do and will set a good example for the people of Vanderburgh County to see its government choose to live within its means as opposed to borrowing to meet routine expenses?…we also do not expect to see the County Council propose to build new dog parks, ball fields, or other trivial items when the basics can’t be done?…some of the things on the chopping block other than new hires and possible layoffs are a free child care program and annual support stipends for the SW Indiana Economic Development Coalition and GAGE?…the CCO salutes the County Council for being honest and tackling the hard work of making ends meet?
IS IT TRUE the Evansville Police Department has concluded an internal investigation into the alleged beating of Robert Evidon and the conclusion is that Officer Mattingly acted appropriately?…evidence examined included cameras at the hospital where Evidon was taken, arrest photographs, the phone records of Officer Mattingly’s brother, and several private photographs taken of or near the incident?…it will now be up to Mr. Evidon and his attorney to take this forward with a formal complaint, a civil lawsuit, or to let it end?…the CCO hopes that justice is done in this unfortunate case for both Robert Evidon and Officer Mattingly and that life in the Haynie’s Corner area can return to normal?
IS IT TRUE that there are very few opportunities to watch the immediate reaction to history being made?…yesterday was such a day in Palm Springs, CA so this writer took that opportunity to attend the celebration of the Supreme Court decision that found that banning same sex marriage is unconstitutional?…in the special case of California that legalized same sex marriage only to see it overturned by a referendum, the referendum was struck down as unconstitutional making same sex marriage an option as quick as the courts can put the paperwork in place?…that is all detail but the moment that left no eyes dry and made the hair stand up on people’s arms came at the start of the celebration when the pledge of allegiance was said by all in attendance?…when the line “LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL†came the celebrants screamed at the top of their lungs with tears in their eyes because for the first time in their lives and the history of the United States those words became true for gay people?…that the United States is a better country today because of this Supreme Court ruling?…may our country continue to improve and our constitution continue to be affirmed as a guarantor of LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL?
The gay marriage thing is another loss for those who get off on controlling the lives of others, mainly religious fanatics.
Indeed but the control freaks you speak of are the ones on the extreme right. What about the control freak in the White House who defends snooping on the innocent and makes war on coal, oil, and gas? Absolute power corrupts absolutely and does it without bias for red or blue politics. It corrupted Nixon and Obama in the same way. Remember DOMA was a product of President Clinton.

WOW! If someone disagrees with, your answer is …leave this country”. There is a whole bunch of US Citzens that believe in religion. Do you want all of them to leave the country as well?
Believing in the teachings of religion is one thing and jamming your religion down other peoples throat through the ballot box is quite another. We are a nation of laws with a constitution that is supposed to be upheld even when it is not in agreement with the will of the people. Please stay and be a productive member of society. Practice your religion as you see fit with the same constiturional protection that was just granted to same sex marriage. We have a good constitution so long as narrow minded people with agendas do not corrupt it.

The best man for the job was voted out in the last election, Rick Davis. I hope the community has learned a valuable lesson when you let haters (Democrat Mainstream) who by the way were lead by the very man who has buried this city in debt. and contracts that are just schemes to make himself and his friends rich or richer, then this is the free spending, clueless government that you get. Another one of the Democrat Benedict Arnold Club has actually moved out of the state (Curt John) so you know that he was really concerned about the future of Evansville. Old take the money and run John is now living in Florida. My only question is why didn’t he take the rest of the Republicrats with him? Republicans pretending to be Democrats. My last count on the city council was 5 Republicans and 4 Democrats. Republicans-Mosby, Weaver, Adams, McGinn, O’Daniel, Democrats-Lindsey, Friend, Riley, Robinson.

If there were a “do-over” Davis would be mayor by a 2 to 1 margin. It’s a shame the Party leaders felt the need to wreck the train rather than let the will of the primary dem voters have a say in who represented “their” party.

Only God knows what the ultimate consequences of same sex marriages will be, both in heaven and on Earth. In the meantime the best thing to do is to mind one’s own business.
There is nothing equal about granting a license based on nothing more than sexual orientation and denying it to others. We have now entered a era when courts legislate based on feelings rather than principles. This decision will eventually result in a federal mandates that all states must recognize the legality of homosexual marriage and provide for it. Will libertarians run to the court house to celebrate that increase in federalism?
So? Would you rather a gay man marry your daughter in a pretend marriage or marry his boyfriend?
That’s silly. I want people to be who they are, but that does not mean their relationships require a license.
I am not speaking for Libertarians but I am speaking as one. This will indeed result in mandates that states recognize the legality of same sex marriage. The provide for thing is a different issue altogether and I am not sure what you mean when you say it. Libetarians in general do not like the whole “provide for” thing in or out of marriage.
From an income tax perspective there is a irrational phenomena known as the “marriage tax”. This happens when a married couple pays higher income taxes than they would pay if they were both single. It is pretty common and dates back to the days of the one paycheck household. Same sex couples will now by definition be caught in the “marriage tax” trap. I see no reason why there should be an extra tax on being married period but somewhere back in our history Congress and the IRS saw fit to tax marriage and it still persists.
The government should not “provide for” any marriage. It should only protect the rights granted by the US Constitution. The Supreme Court has spoken on the rights of people to have the states prevented from banning same sex marriages. Their interpretation was correct. What will soon play out in 37 states that have not legalized same sex marriage will be interesting to see. The court did not rule on legality but implicitly did by stating it is unconstitutional to ban.
The question of whether Indiana will recognize a same sex marriage performed in Vermont will have to be addressed. Indiana recognizes marriages entered into by legally consenting adults in other countries, on cruise ships in international waters, etc. I would think out of state legal marriages will have to be recognized but who knows. Will a same sex couple in Indiana have to file their federal taxes as married filing jointly and their state taxes as single? There are lots of details to be worked out.
By provide for I mean that I think we will soon see s federal mandate that all states must offer same sex marriage. That does not set well with the libertarian part of me.
I think all penalizing taxes should be corrected. This movement only added same sex relationships to the definition of marriage and I do not see that as equality. Perhaps government does need to get out of the marriage business or open it to all.
I want anyone to be able to build a life together, but I see nothing to celebrate about these rulings accomplishing that objective. You’re right there are a lot of details left to be worked out.
There is not much to the provide part. California is already set up to sell licenses to same sex couples and the little bit of paperwork that had to be done happened in 48 hours. It is done. The license is the same as before and the fee is too. Come to think of it I agree with you that government has no business at all interfereing with marriage including taxing married and single differently. Everytime the government tries to do social engineering it blows up in their face.
I personally know of some very intelligent and talented people who are leaving Indiana for opportunities elsewhere including same-sex marriage. They are my friends and I will miss them. There are several reasons I like living in Indiana but this stand on inequality is not one of them. This is more than a brain drain. It is a quality of life drain that will effect Indiana for many years to come.
