     Trump Threatens to Retaliate Against Reporters Who Don’t Show ‘Respect’

     Trump said that he might revoke the credentials of additional White House reporters if they did not “treat the White House with respect,” lobbing another threat at the news media two days after his administration effectively blacklisted the CNN correspondent Jim Acosta

     “When you’re in the White House, this is a very sacred place for me, a very special place,” Trump said as he left Washington for a brief jaunt to Paris. “You have to treat the White House with respect. You have to treat the presidency with respect.”

     The removal of Mr. Acosta’s credential, after a tense news conference on Wednesday when the CNN correspondent aggressively questioned Trump, raised alarms among press freedom groups that say the president is encroaching on journalists’ basic right to cover the government.

     Aides to Trump said that he was most bothered by reporters who, in his view, spoke to him in a belligerent manner, and that his willingness to take questions — he did so for about 25 minutes on Friday — made him more open to scrutiny than past presidents.

     But Trump’s retaliation against Mr. Acosta, buttressed by a false claim that the correspondent had handled a female White House intern roughly during the news conference on Wednesday, has little precedent in the modern White House.

     Trump lashed out at Mr. Acosta calling him “a very unprofessional guy.” He went on to insult other members of the White House press corps, including April D. Ryan, the correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks and one of a small number of African-American reporters who cover the administration.

     “You talk about somebody that’s a loser; she doesn’t know what the hell she’s doing,” Mr. Trump said of Ms. Ryan, in an unprompted diatribe. “She gets publicity, and then she gets a pay raise or a contract with, I think, CNN. But she’s very nasty. And she shouldn’t be. She shouldn’t be. You’ve got to treat the White House and the office of the presidency with respect.”

     Mr. Trump also laced into another African-American journalist, Abby Phillip of CNN, who asked the president if he wanted the new acting attorney general, Matthew G. Whitaker, to “rein in” the investigation being led by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.

     “What a stupid question that is,” the president replied to Ms. Phillip. “What a stupid question. But I watch you a lot — you ask a lot of stupid questions.”

     In a statement, CNN said Ms. Phillip “did not ask a ‘stupid’ question today at the White House.”

     “In fact, she asked the most pertinent question of the day,” the network added.

     Mr. Trump, who relishes jousting with reporters, has offered tough words for journalists of all races and genders. In the past few days, though, he has insulted or replied harshly to several African-American women, including Ms. Ryan, Ms. Phillip and Yamiche Alcindor, a White House correspondent for PBS.

     At the Wednesday news conference, Mr. Trump repeatedly told Ms. Ryan to “sit down,” accusing her of interrupting a male reporter, as she tried to ask a question about voter suppression. When Ms. Alcindor asked Mr. Trump about Republicans and white nationalists, he called her query “a racist question.”

     Ms. Ryan, speaking on CNN on Friday, said that the three presidents she covered before Mr. Trump “understood that reporters were part of the underpinning of this nation.”

     “Sometimes we ask questions that they did not like, and maybe there would have been a bit of retaliation and fight-back,” Ms. Ryan added. “But at the end of the day it was part of the American process.”

     Olivier Knox, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, said on Thursday that his group had been lobbying privately for the administration to restore Mr. Acosta’s press pass.

     “It’s a pretty basic principle that a president does not get to decide who covers them,” Mr. Knox told National Public Radio. “One of the things that I’ve heard from many colleagues nationally and internationally is, essentially, if they can do this today to Jim, they can do it tomorrow to somebody else.”

       San Francisco bans plastic straws, but streets are littered with free hypodermic needle caps

       Even as San Francisco bans plastic straws in an effort to clean up the city, the streets are now reportedly littered with plastic caps from free syringes.

       The orange plastic caps come from the free hypodermic needles that officials hand out to prevent diseases spreading among drug users. The city hands out an estimated 400,000 syringes each month for drug users, but has little control on how these needles are disposed of. The San Francisco Chronicle previously reported more than 154,000 needles end up in the streets, sidewalks, parks and playgrounds.

       Meanwhile, leaders in the California city are hoping to prevent plastic straws from washing up in the San Francisco Bay. The city unanimously approved in July a plan to ban plastic straws and stirrers, as well as food containers made with fluorinated chemicals. Items such as condiment packets and napkins will be given out at bars and restaurants upon request.

     U.S. Border Patrol Council Issues “Statement” With Easily Disprovable Lies About AOC And Site Visit

     Monday some members of Congress were allowed into the El Paso detention center to see what the conditions are like for migrants after reports of unsanitary and cruel confinement for asylum seekers, many of whom are being detained separately from their children. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was among the visitors in an oversight trip arranged by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Unfortunately, only hours before her visit, she was featured in a bombshell story from ProPublica about a secret Facebook group with 9,500 Border Patrol members where some members shared vile, racist, and misogynist comments and memes, one of which was a sexist cartoon of AOC engaged in a sex act with a detained migrant.

     As news of the ProPublica exposé went viral, the National Border Patrol Council, which represents Border Patrol employees, released a statement on the “I’m 10-15” Facebook group (“10-15” Border Patrol code for “aliens in custody”) and noted that not everyone in the group is a current employee of the Border Patrol. In their effort to do damage control, they essentially said the awful comments were from a few bad apples. And then they attributed statements to AOC that she did not say, specifically that she called agents “Nazis”

     AOC and others quickly responded because she never called the agents Nazis and called it “truly nuts” the Border Patrol was “pushing easily disprovable lies about members of Congress”

     AOC joined other members of Congressional Hispanic Caucus, including Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro, California Rep. Judy Chu, Texas Rep. Veronica Escobar and Pennsylvania Rep. Madeleine Dean. Several members said they were treated poorly and/or felt threatened by Customs and Border Patrol agents inside the facility, although it was the armed agents who would later claim they “felt threatened.” Ocasio-Cortez called them on that falsehood as well.

     “And to these CBP officers saying they felt “threatened” by me, they were literally discussing making a GoFundMe for an officer who attacked my on my tour. They confiscated my phone, and they were all armed. I’m 5’4”. They’re just upset I exposed their inhumane behavior” AOC said to show their lies

     Making people drink out of toilets is inhumane. Taking people’s children and not even telling them where they’ve gone is inhumane. Some of these children will never be reunited with their parents and that is a shame we will all have to carry now.

     It is not possible to read what was happening in that group and not be horrified that these Border Patrol employees were so freely sharing these things in a large group setting.

     One member encouraged Border Patrol agents to hurl a “burrito at these bitches.” Another, apparently a patrol supervisor, wrote, “Fuck the hoes.” “There should be no photo ops for these scum buckets,” posted a third member.

     Clearly, people need to be fired. It’s time to clean house at the Border Patrol. Specifically, people at the top need to be fired because what we saw revealed in that Facebook group is a lack of leadership more than anything else. The fact that people felt so free to express such things like mocking migrant deaths and vulgar comments about female members of Congress openly tells you something about the environment overall at the U.S. Border Patrol. As the saying goes, the fish rots from the head. When you lead with ethics and moral clarity, you demand the same from those who work for you and with you. That’s what AOC is doing. That’s what everyone in government should be doing, even at the Border Patrol.

   GOP Congressman Urges Trump To Reject Supreme Court Ruling On Citizenship Question

   Freshman Republican Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX) urged Trump on Tuesday to ignore the Supreme Court’s decision on a controversial census citizenship question and to unilaterally order the question be included, advising him to print the survey with the question regardless of the court’s ruling

   “It’s the lawyers advising him. Trump should ignore them. Completely. Print the Census with the questions, and issue a statement explaining why” Roy tweeted referring to the Supreme Court Justices

   His suggestion that the leader of the Executive Branch defies a ruling by the Judicial Branch’s top court would require Trump to take action that’s PROHIBITED by the Constitution. Current law and the Constitution hinder a president’s ability to delay the questionnaire

   The Supreme Court struck a blow last week to the Commerce Department’s attempt to add the question, which critics argue would discourage large swaths of minorities and undocumented people from answering and lead to inaccurate results about population sizes. Among other things, the decennial census is used by states to redraw congressional districts based on populations that last a decade, potentially having nationwide political impacts, such as which party controls the House

   Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the Commerce Department lacked justification when claiming the question would help enforce the Voting Rights. He described it as “contrived” reasoning and further said that the evidence indicated the Commerce Department made the decision to add the question before going to the Justice Department seeking legal justification

   “Accepting contrived reasons would defeat the purpose of the enterprise. If judicial review is to be more than an empty ritual, it must demand something better than the explanation offered for the action taken in this case. We do not hold that the agency decision here was substantively invalid. But agencies must pursue their goals reasonably. Reasoned decision-making under the Administrative Procedure Act calls for an explanation for agency action. What was provided here was more of a distraction”

   On Tuesday night Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the administration would not be asking the citizenship question and had begun printing the survey without it, saying “I respect the Supreme Court but strongly disagree with its ruling regarding my decision to reinstate a citizenship question on the 2020 Census. The Census bureau has started the process of printing the decennial questionnaires without the question”

   It’s still an open question as to whether or not the Trump administration will actually follow the Supreme Court’s ruling, since it has no real means of enforcing its rulings other than a long-standing norm which, as we know from Trump’s continuous ethical violations, this administration is not particularly fond of. This is a point made by Alexander Hamilton in the Federalist papers:

   “The judiciary has no influence over either the sword or the purse, no direction either of the strength or of the wealth of the society, and can take no active resolution whatever. It must ultimately depend upon the aid of the executive arm even for the efficacy of its judgments”
