Every 98 seconds an American is sexually assaulted and every 8 seconds that victim is a child. In order to shed light on the realities of sexual violence throughout our country, 17 years ago Sexual Assault Awareness Month was established for the month of April. Although one month is not enough to solve the widespread issue of sexual violence, the goal of Sexual Assault Awareness Month is to engage new voices and to enhance prevention efforts throughout the remainder of the year. The theme for the 17th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month is “Embrace Your Voice†to inform individuals on how they can use their words to promote safety, respect, and equality to stop sexual violence before it happens.
