IS IT TRUE OCTOBER 02, 2017

11
We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we as responsible citizens of this community need to address in a rational and responsible way?
IS IT TRUE its obvious that the City of Evansville doesn’t have a revenue problem but they do have a spending problem?
IS IT TRUE that the discussion between City Councilman and Finance Chairman Dan McGinn (R) and members of the Winnecke administration has now surpassed the Homestead Tax Credit elimination phase and has advanced to increasing the Local Option Income Tax to the maximum allowable under state statute (an increase of 25% to the level of 1.25% of all income)?
IS IT TRUE that the proposed $8 million Local Option income tax hike is causing quite a political stirs between city and county elected officials?  …City Councilmen Justin Elpers and John Hayden say it isn’t the tax itself they have a problem with, but with the City of Evansville for not allowing the County Council to vote on the issue?
IS IT TRUE that Councilman Elpers and Hayden feel that City Council are deciding the fate of county residents while county residents can’t vote for us,?”   …Elpers also said’ “this is taxation without representation.”
IS IT TRUE at the last City Council meeting the Elpers and Hayden resolution was voted down by a 5-4 margin?  …were told that members of the Winnecke administration were extremely pleased with City Council vote on this issue?
IS IT TRUE the vote on the Local Option Income Tax and Homestead Tax Credit increase are scheduled for a vote at the City Council’s meeting on October 9th at 5:30 p.m.
IS IT TRUE that the CPA firm of London Witte advised the Winnecke Administration to implement a “budget spending plan” more than three years ago?  …that no “budget spending plan” has been developed by the administration as of this date?
IS IT TRUE that former Burdette Park Director, Jacob Murphy, is doing a good job as the new Director of the Weights and Measures Department? ….Jacob served two years at Burdette Park and was transferred to Weights and Measures earlier this year.  …we hear that Mr. Murphy is extremely happy in his new position?
IS IT TRUE we are being told that Burdette Park Interim Director, Jerry Grannon, is doing well in his new position?  …under Mr. Grannon leadership Burdette Park saw the highest attendance in over ten years?
IS IT TRUE all we can say is that members of the Vanderburgh County Commission and of the County Council seemly lucked out when they forced these two county department heads to accept other county positions?  …all is well that ends well?
Todays READERS POLL question is: Do you feel its time for the taxpayers of this community to start holding our public officials accountable for their bad business decisions concerning tax increases?

  1. “City Councilmen Justin Elpers and John Hayden say it isn’t the tax itself they have a problem with, but with the City of Evansville for not allowing the County Council to vote on the issue?…” The County Council does not need permission from the City Council to vote on this issue. Is it True that …so far they have run away from it do so they can ? enjoy the money increase, but they will not have to take the political hit for increasing taxes !? Doc

    • That makes sense and I believe it to be true. So why wouldn’t the City Council refuse to be enablers and refuse to move forward without them. You guys are giving them cover Doc.

    • Is it true that the D’s are really R’s? True D’s would never vote to increase income taxes. Time for new D’s!

      • Your sarcastic post is funny. The new D’s are in Berkley and locally are members of Indivisible. I encourage the D’s to promote Bernie and Harris as the face of the Democrat Party.

  2. The time to have held these a-holes accountable for their wreckless spending was 10 years ago ,now is the time for these people to be serving a sentence in a correctional facility,,after all the guiltily parties knew they were scamming the public

  3. Don’t forget the City spent (is spending) $18 million on Coures Folly, also known as the too skinny North Main Street shopping cart path project with weed bed planters.

  4. I don’t feel sorry for the taxpayers of Evansville. Those that DIDN’T BOTHER TO VOTE in the last election and those who VOTED FOR the buffoons who occupy our government deserve what they have!

  5. The State Board’s audit report on the City was due on Saturday, yet they say that the earliest that we will see it is in February? The State Board recently raised their fees too. Something is not right there! How can we hold our local governmental officials accountable when the auditors that check their books aren’t? Contact your state representative and state senator and tell them that it’s time to defund the State Board. Let a CPA firm that can meet the federal deadline do it. Who knows, unlike this local bunch at the State Board now, a local CPA firm might actually have CPAs on the team!
