Dear Dr. Marcus: where have you been?
In today’s (April 23, 2017) Evansville Courier&Press, front page on the Business Section, Dr. Morton Marcus, a former economist at Indiana University and a columnist for many Hoosier publications, gives us his insights in an article titled “Spending for economic development”.
It seems a furniture manufacturer is moving a facility from Grabill Indiana to New Haven Indiana, where it currently has a presence, in order to consolidate the operation into larger quarters where they could expand in the future. In his column Dr. Marcus questions whether the economic development funds granted to the business by state and federal organizations, some $360,000., was as high a priority as say….filling potholes in Allen County.
Why would Dr. Marcus be exercised over such small potatoes. Has he never heard of Evansville and Vanderburgh county? In Dr, Marcus’ column he states that 12 miles separated the two facilities. Here in Evansville, downtown Evansville to be precise, we have witnessed significantly larger amounts of taxpayer money being granted to VECTREN Corporation, Old National Bank, and Hilliard Lyons, none of which moved more than a couple of blocks! These Evansville firms also were the recipients of huge reductions in their future property taxes.
Dear Dr. Marcus: Please give Evansville her due. When it comes to granting taxpayer money for “economic development”, we take a back seat to no one! Perhaps it is just easier to pick on a couple of small towns who’s combined population is only 16,585.
i keep wondering if trump will keep his promise to give coal miners back their coal jobs
