Aces look for 3-win weekend on Sunday

A pair of home matches on Saturday resulted in two 6-1 wins for the University of Evansville women’s tennis team.  The Purple Aces opened the day with a win over Bradley before defeating Taylor University at Tri-State Athletic Club.

Evansville looks to make it a perfect 3-0 weekend when they take on Illinois State at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning in the outdoor courts at Tri-State Athletic Club.

“The Bradley match was an excellent team effort for the win. We were able to get the doubles point for the 2nd MVC match in a row and that makes a huge difference. Not only from the point of going into singles up 1-0, but it is also a big confidence boost for our team as we take great pride in our doubles,” UE head coach Jayson Wiseman said.  “We were very confident coming into this match that we matched up very well with Bradley despite their exceptional depth of talent. We did a great job of securing the first set on four key courts and we’re able to squeeze them with continued pressure and secure the win.”

“We hope to build off the momentum of this win and play well tomorrow against Illinois St,” Wiseman added.

Wiseman was also proud of his team for their efforts against Taylor.

“This match allowed us to try out some different lineup combinations and formations that we’ve used in practice and see how they worked in a live match situation. It also allowed us to work out a few kinks in singles before tomorrow’s match. Our team did an excellent job of staying aggressive and quickly securing the win,” he said.

Evansville picked up the doubles point in both matches to get an early edge.  UE also had a stellar day in singles.  Chieko Yamada, Diana Tkachenko Daria Pentsova and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga each went 2-0 in singles.  Yamada and Tkachenko played at #1 and 2 singles, respectively while Pentsova earned the win in the fourth flight against the Braves before playing in the #3 spot against Taylor.

Pascual-Larrinaga was in the #6 flight in the win over Bradley and moved up to #4 versus Taylor.  Theodora Soldatou added a win in the fifth flight in the day’s first match-up while Andjela Brguljan took the win in two sets against Taylor in the second outing in flight five.
