Judge Brett Niemeier recently detailed his newest collaboration with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. Niemeier, who has had multiple collaborations in the past with the EVSC, said this newest effort rises to a whole new level of cooperation. The EVSC has partnered with the Judge Niemeier by entering into a contract, so that the judge can be involved with children and families who attend the new alternative high school, The Academy of Innovative Studies, located within the old North High School. The students do not need to be on probation.
Niemeier said the contract, made possible by a new state law, gives him the authority to bring parents and children in front of him to do education reviews and recommend services that the parents or children should undergo. The Judge can remove teens from school, notify Child Services, request criminal charges to be filed, and require parental involvement. Niemeier stated he has already met with several teenagers and their parents and the meetings have gone well.
A.I.S. has given Judge Niemeier and his probation officers their own office to use for meetings. The use of probation officers in the schools was first started almost ten years ago by Judge Niemeier. Niemeier said this is the next logical extension of that service, plus allows the Court to be involved with teenagers who are not on probation. “The goal is for these teens to get an education and stay off probation,†stated Niemeier.
A.I.S. already has a different look than most schools. Almost all of the students who attend have been suspended or expelled from the previous school. Hallways have tape on the floors, so students should not cross over to the other side of a hallway. This cuts down on horseplay and opportunities to start problems with other students. Further, students are subjected to drug screens. Niemeier hopes his presence will deter teenagers from getting into trouble and being kicked out. Just like a police officer can deter certain kids from doing something they shouldn`t, Judge Niemeier is hoping his presence does likewise. Niemeier stated, “Time will tell, if this effective, but we are hopeful, since A.I.S. provides the discipline and structure that a lot of these kids need. If they are successful they will be given the chance to go back to their home school. Of course, some kids do not like the new rules, but they need to earn the privileges that a regular school gives them.â€
I’m voting for you Judge because you are honest, fair and hard working!
Judge Niemeier
In case you don’t know, you enjoy a great popularity with the Civic Center employees.
They are quietly working in your behalf.
Stay postive and keep working, that’s what we are doing for you.
For the love of children, please, don’t let big signs; free I-pads, Target cards and pizza buy this race! Not all the money in the world can buy the good deeds of Brett Niemeier!
Yet another example of why Judge Niemeier is one of the most innovative and highly regarded judges in Indiana. Also, this program is a collaborative effort with the EVSC that does not cost one extra cent to anyone. I find it very interesting that Judge Niemeier’s opponent, Barry Blackard, claims that Judge Niemeier isn’t a community oriented judge and doesn’t do enough to address school violence. Mr. Blackard needs to reach into his bag of campaign rhetoric or is that his bag of slick advertising and freebies and try and come up with a real issue, not something Judge Niemeier is already focused on. Obviously this arrangement with EVSC didn’t happen overnight. Mr. Blackard stick with defending people accused of committing felonies and leave the care of the county’s children to Brett Niemeier.
Well-well–well looks like we have a race on our hands.
I can’t believe that the Judge hasn’t taken this campaign to this Blackard guy.
Everybody know that the Mayor and his back room political buddies are supporting Blackard over Judge Niemeier.
Give him he– Brent!
If the Mayor and his political conies are supporting Blackard then my vote goes to the sitting Judge.
I voted for our new Mayor but I have been completely disappointed in him to say the least.
Mayor Winnenke and his back room boys and girls support Blackard because it’s about money and power.
Thank god hard work wins over power and greed.
This kind of pumping big bucks to win an election paid off for the new Mayor of Evansville.
But Winnenke can’t pull it off the second time around.
Re-elect Judge Niemeier the voice of the common people! Lloyd W. take your money and stick it!
Looks like the Mayor and his big ticket boys and girls have been outed!
Get ready for LLoyd and Carol to run and hide from this issue.
Eric Williams for Mayor.
Looks like tomorrow that the Mayor and his media spin doctors shall be doing damage control concerning Judge Niemeier race.
Please Judge don’t believe anything coming from the Mayor Winnenke side about they are staying out of this race.
Judge, please follow the money and you shall get your answer.
Poeple knows what Judge Niemeier is about.
It’s time they start researching what this Blackard guy is about.
As quoted above, “Niemeier stated, “Time will tell, if this effective, but we are hopeful, since A.I.S. provides the discipline and structure that a lot of these kids need.”
This style of discipline and structure should be a model for the entire school system. Students today have too many freedoms at school. You are in school to be educated! I hope this works, and can be used system wide.
Thank you Judge Niemeier for working with the youth of the EVSC. Mr. Blackard doesn’t have the experience or knowledge it takes to work with our school officials. You and your team of probation officers are doing a great job. Money should not win over experience. Your record says it all.
