OXFORD, Ohio – The Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming teams continued to swim well at the Miami (OH) Invitational in Oxford, Ohio on Friday.Â
Shelby Koontz was terrific in the women’s 100 butterfly, winning with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 54.23. Koontz’s mark ranks her as the 13th-fastest performer in the event in IU history.
Nicholas Carlson also had a standout swim for the Hoosiers, winning the 200 freestyle with a NCAA B cut time of 1:37.53. Joey Snodderly took 13th overall with a mark of 1:41.38, while Christopher Woods touched 25th in a time of 1:43.87. On the women’s side, Hannah Sakaluk took 11th with a time of 1:51.53.
In the men’s 100 breaststroke, Sam Apa led the Hoosiers, taking second with a personal-best time and NCAA B cut time of 54.13. Apa’s time ranks him as the 10th-fastest swimmer in the event in IU history. Steve Husch took fifth overall with a mark of 55.49, while Nikola Andjelic was seventh in 55.86.
Katie Keller had a personal-best showing in the women’s 100 backstroke, finishing fourth with a time of 55.41. Keller’s time ranks her as the 19th-best performer in the event in Indiana history.
On the men’s side, Wyeth Brock tied for 13th with a mark of 51.06, while Drew Keenan was 15th in a time of 51.41.
For the IU women in the 100 breaststroke, Hope Hayward placed seventh overall with a personal-best time of 1:03.94, ranking her as the 20th-fastest swimmer in the event at IU. Teammate Taylor Truex was 13th overall in a time of 1:04.58.
Brian Valedon led a 2-3-4 finish for Indiana in the men’s 400 IM, placing second with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 3:53.04. Valedon’s mark ranks him as the 20th-best performer in the event in school history. Jackson Etter took third place in 3:54.97, while Ethan Curl was fourth in 3:56.86.
In the men’s 100 butterfly, Kyle Morris placed third overall with a time of 49.57, while Nolan Plant was 15th with a mark of 50.65. Brock was 16th in 50.87.
Hayward led IU in the 400 IM, placing sixth with a time of 4:26.86, while Lydia Welty was 18th with a time of 4:37.91.
In the men’s 800 freestyle relay, the team of Plant, Woods, Matthew Kint and Carlson took fifth overall with a time of 6:47.78. In the women’s 200 medley relay, the IU team of Keller, Truex, Koontz and Hannah Sakaluk placed 10th with a mark of 1:46.67. On the men’s side, the team of Keenan, Husch, Plant and Andjelic took 10th with a time of 1:46.67.Â
The Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will conclude competition at both the AT&T USA Swimming Winter Nationals and at the Miami (OH) Invitational on Saturday.
