West Nile Virus Activity Update and Action Planned by Health Department‏

On behalf of Dr. Raymond Nicholson, M.D., Health Officer, I would like to take this opportunity to

share this West Nile Virus Activity Update and Action Planned by the Vanderburgh County Health Department Media Release with you.

Recently two pools of mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile Virus. The Vanderburgh County Health Department

plans to take perform adulticiding in the area identified in the attached media release and adulticiding map.

Adulticiding is the application of insecticides to control mosquito adults. Mosquito adulticides usually are applied as a last resort in areas where public health officials have decided that the healths risks from West Nile virus or other mosquito borne illness outweigh the risk from exposure to the insecticide.

The Health Department will continue to focus on larviciding and habitat elimination as these are the most effective forms of mosquito control.

The attached information will provide additional information including what precautions residents should take to protect their families.

A total of two pools of mosquitoes from the same location were found to be positive for the virus.

To date, over 1400 mosquitos have been submitted by the Vanderburgh County Health Department

for West Nile Virus testing. The Vanderburgh County Health Department is going to perform focused

adulticiding operations in areas where the samples were collected and significant mosquito activity has

been verified. These adulticiding operations will take place in residential areas bound by the East Lloyd

Expressway, South Burkhardt Road, Newburgh Road, the east Vanderburgh County line, Outer Lincoln Avenue

& Fuquay Road. Operations will include Kirkwood Lakes Estates and Kirkwood Subdivision. The adulticiding

on the designated date, they will resume on the next available day.

The Vanderburgh County Health Department will continue to focus its efforts on habitat elimination, education,

and treatment of stagnant or standing water as these are the most effective forms of mosquito control.

The Health Department continues to ask residents to:

¨ Be Smart. Take special precautions when outdoors between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active;

¨ Be Safe. Use insect repellant containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus; and

¨ Be Certain. Make sure your property is free of any standing water, which could be breeding grounds for the

mosquitoes that carry the virus. Empty flowerpots, buckets, old tires, and clogged gutters.
