EVANSVILLE, IN – Members of the Glenwood Neighborhood Association, Washington Avenue Church of
Christ, Zion Missionary Baptist Church Youth Group and youth from the Caldwell Homes YMCA program
will join Clean Evansville volunteers in picking-up trash around the Glenwood neighborhood Saturday,
July 7, from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
Glenwood Neighborhood Association President Lucy Williams said the association has conducted two
clean-ups this year and accepted an invitation from Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and City Council President
and 4th Ward Rep. Connie Robinson to take part in the July Clean Evansville event. She said around 50
youth are expected to participate. The association will host a picnic for the volunteers at Caldwell Park
following the clean-up. The park is located near South Governor Street and Sweetser Avenue.
“We are so happy to have the Mayor’s (Clean Evansville) group come out to help pick-up trash in our
area,†Williams said. “We are very proud of the work Rep. Connie Robinson does for the community.â€
The city of Evansville is proud to mark the six month milestone of Mayor Winnecke’s Clean Evansville
Initiative. Launched in January, Clean Evansville has quickly escalated into a very successful program. As
of June, the initiative had collected 12,439 pounds of trash with the help of 985 local volunteers. That
translates into more than 1,000 bags of trash that are now off the streets of Evansville.
“Clean Evansville has been enthusiastically embraced by the community and has seen countless
volunteers show up every month. I’ve had people comment on what a clean city we have without
knowing this initiative is in place,†Winnecke said. “We are making a difference and it’s a big movement.
It is indicative of the level of pride we have in our city. I see Clean Evansville continuing in the future,
and I will proudly lead it every month.â€
Six teams of volunteers will spread out across the Glenwood neighborhood on Saturday. Team One will
be led by Mayor Winnecke, Team Two by Timothy Weir of Accuride, Team Three by Brian Emmons of
Veolia, Team Four by Carol McClintock of FC Tucker Emge Realty, Team Five by Patricia Jackson of
Vectren, Team Six by Deb Atchison of Habitat for Humanity of Evansville, and a kids team will meet at
Akin Park.
“Clean Evansville is an inspiration to me due to the hundreds of volunteers who have come out each
month, whatever the weather, to collect litter across the city,†said Timothy Weir, who heads the Clean
Evansville committee. “If volunteerism is the ultimate expression of citizenship, then Evansville has
incredible citizens. They care about creating a beautiful community in which to live, work and play. And
they back that up with their actions. Thanks to our volunteers, Clean Evansville is already making a
difference after just six months.â€
Allied Waste will provide volunteers to collect and transport the trash to the landfill, Rural King has
donated $100 toward the purchase of supplies and Keep Evansville Beautiful is coordinating the
volunteers.
The next scheduled clean-up is set for Saturday August 4, 2012 around Wesselman Park located in the
