IS IT TRUE June 18, 2012
IS IT TRUE the parks of the City of Evansville have once again been called out for being a garbage filled mess where drug addicts needles, rubbers (condoms for those who don’t like that word), and liquor bottles ruin the place for families with children to enjoy these parks?…that the job of keeping 2,300 acres mowed and cleaned is a daunting task to begin with but it seems after at least a decade of people knowing the truth that the truth is finally being spoken?…that truth is that there are a number of people who do utilize and enjoy the Evansville parks that are using the parks for drug use and distribution, have sex in public, and even intentionally overturn waste containers to spread garbage all over the place?…we admire the attention to the litter that has been broadcasted by Mayor Winnecke and a small army of litter picker uppers?…these efforts while noble and the right just seem to be so small in the face of the garbage problem that picking up trash may be to Evansville about as effective as pouring a cup of coffee into the Ohio River to try and warm it up?…we wonder if the people of Evansville in total are just too full of slobs and irresponsible people for those who prefer tidiness and cleanliness to make a difference?…it sure seems that way?
IS IT TRUE that one thing for sure is that the City of Evansville is currently in the middle of expanding the park system by two with those being the 37 acres at Roberts Stadium and another being Mayor Weinzapfel’s last minute glorification announcement of the Centennial Park on the lot behind the old Greyhound Bus station?…that we are sure that both parks can be nice but will cost nearly $10 Million to build and another $1 Million or so per year to maintain?…this is happening when the parks director is open and honest about the fact that they can’t keep up with the mowing and litter removal at the parks that Evansville does have?…that given the state of Evansville’s parks and the admission of the people in charge that they can’t keep the parks we have in good order that the last thing Evansville needs to do is expand the parks?…what needs to be considered is to eliminate the problem parks by either letting them go fallow or selling them at public auction?…that maybe if there are only parks in neighborhoods where the people of the neighborhood patrol the parks then the City can actually keep the parks clean?…the goal right now needs to be to shrink the park system by eliminating acreage starting with the biggest problem parks?…the 2,300 acres may not be manageable with the kind of budget that Evansville can afford and the only solution is to take the size down to what an acceptable budget can handle even if that is going down to 1,000 acres or less?
IS IT TRUE that last week it was reported that the song “God Bless the USA†by Lee Greenwood was banned from a classroom in a public school?…this song was widely associated with President Ronald Reagan and was played at his campaign rallies?…while we support the separation of church and state banning a song that still gives one a sense of pride in our country that was part of a campaign seems more aimed at the ideology of President Reagan than at violation of church and state?…the teacher that made the decision to ban this song needs to learn to read the words on the American currency that pays her salary?…it is time for such shenanigans to come with some consequence?…we hear that Cuba is hiring teachers and would like to suggest that the teacher who banned this song needs to get herself a job in Cuba where the currency may meet with her approval for political correctness?…this kind of nonsense will someday provoke a serious backlash at the ballot box and in public budgets?
Hey look at the bright side at least we got a overpriced Jon downtown ,the rich are getting richer ,junkies got dope to shoot ,the rich historians have 5k $ light posts and taxpayers have an extra 200,000 bill due to 5 city council members , gage , a rino mayor ( democrat) And weinzapfel ,taxpayer gets all bills
Is this the IIT? for the 17th or the 18th?
I’m no prude…but use of the word “rubbers” is further evidence this is not a news source and only an angry blog…or you’re a pervert and like to use naughty words when there are decent ones that would suffice.
I agree that the word condoms should have been used, but I disagree that the word rubbers is naughty. I’d consider it slang.
Arguable…however…the only other phrase even remotely nearing slang in the entire article is “litter picker uppers”…either use slang/colorful words or don’t…but use them wisely. Use of the word “rubbers” is a distraction in the 1st paragrap..and the repetitive “…that” format is already painful enough to read.
If the man said “prophylactic device”, you probably wouldn’t know what he was talking about, and I think you get tittilated acting outraged at “naughty words” like “used rubber”-in fact, you probably get tittilated at the word “tittilate”.
Grow up. Or go clean up the used rubbers and junkie needles out of the parks.
You are not only a prude but are letting your dislike for the CCO cloud your thinking. I hope you are not this dumb on your job today. Naughty words??? You are delusional.
Use of antiseptic, clinical, or ‘formal’ titles for objects lessens the impact of the story. We’re talking about litter covering our parks, after all, and I believe the author was attempting to convey an entirely appropriate sense of disgust at these objects. A story concerning condoms, hypodermic syringes previously used for intravenous injection of illegal/illicit pharmaceuticals, and soiled disposable infant undergarmets lacks the same gut impact as talking about rubbers, used druggie needles, and dirty diapers.
Words paint pictures. Your somewhat odd disgust of the word ‘rubber’ is exactly what the editor was trying to bring out, methinks.
Thank you and yes, we do try to choose words to call people to action when appropriate. Condoms and syringes are indeed handed out at public clinics to prevent the spread of disease. They only become rubbers and drug addicts needles when they are used and discarded in public parks. Hopefully the people who may be offended by the politically incorrect terms we chose will have the gumption to call their elected officials to demand that such things are cleansed from our parks.

If you don’t like the format that CCO uses please don’t read it!
Sounds like the Courier should be more to your intellectual liking-boring and vague!
Yeah…if only it was that simple…just as I’m sure the intellectual powerhouses that support the CCO probably continue to read the C&P – I catch myself rubbernecking at the bloody mess locally known as the CCO.
The C&P is slowly but surely going out of business. They haven’t had anything worthwhile to print in over 10 years. Good Riddance!
I would put monitor cameras up in the parks, and signs announcing to all they are under surveillance, and subject to prosecution for any recorded antics. (And put them in metal boxes, with High Voltage signs around them for idiots who would steal your dirty underwear) Maybe even put those shock trays like people put on bird feeders to keep squirrels off-some people are really stupid.
And, as for the stupid people, just put suspicious looking metal boxes on poles, with lots of warning signs around (in case they can actually read) thus evoking better behavior from them. Make it a psychological study, and get grant money for it. They have those green and purple boxes on power lines to collect data on insect population-they have wooden towers at the zoo everywhere for specific bird data collection-put black metal boxes with warning signs and see if it alters human behavior.

It’s obvious that you have no idea what intellectual thought is about.
Oh, IVY TECH is offering a GED course next week. Why don’t you sign up for it!
Whoa! Easy there, pardner. You might need to step away from the internetz for a bit and find a nice place to relax and unplug.
One can disagree, even strongly, without name-calling.
Hey Houseoder, how many of these other names for rubbers are in your vocabulary.

READER’S POLL
What will it take to clean up Evansville’s City Parks?
Answer: prosecutions!

Excellent answer. How about trying some low-hanging fruit, as well? In Fulton Park, for example, there are 4 trashcans located in the entire park (approximately 1 square block). All 4 of these cans are lined up neatly on the curb along Michigan Avenue, which probably makes it very easy for parks workers to pick them up and empty them. HOWEVER, if you’re drinking a soda and waiting for a ride at the bus stop on Franklin you have to walk a block to find a can. If you’re playing basketball or on the monkey bars you have to walk about 50 or 75 yards.
Spreading the cans out would at least make it easier for folks to toss their trash if they chose to.
You are obviously over qualified to work in any city office, especially the parks dept.
Delta Bravo does work for the city….but not for the parks department, he is a very intelligent, articulate, and genuinely concern individual who would make a excellent city council representative IMHO.

FATHER’S DAY
Father’s Day might always be a tricky holiday for Woody Allen but this year was particularly awkward. Ronan Farrow, the 24-year-old son of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen, let loose yesterday tweeting, “Happy father’s day — or as they call it in my family, happy brother-in-law’s day.â€
Mia Farrow even got in on the act, re-tweeting his message and adding her own comment: “BOOM.â€
Woody and Ronan have been estranged for years since his parents split and because Woody was dating (and later married) Soon-Yi Previn, Mia’s adopted daughter, Ronan’s step-sister. He has been quoted in the past as saying, “He’s my father married to my sister. That makes me his son and his brother-in-law. That is such a moral transgression.â€
Soon-Yi has said that she never considered Allen her father or even a father figure, noting that Andrew Previn, Farrow’s former husband was her adoptive father.
Ronan, named Satchel Ronan O’Sullivan Farrow when he was born in 1987, is the sole biological child of Woody and actress Mia Farrow. He is currently serving as special adviser to the Secretary of State for Global Youth Issues and director of the State Department’s Global Youth Issues office.

Let’s hear what Al Lindsey has to say about the parks and Roberts Stadium. He’s been right as rain on many recent issues and it appears that he may join Dan McGinn, Dan Adams and John Friend as the members of the City Council that are consistently representing the taxpayers. On the other hand, Mosby, Robinson and Weaver are hopeless at best.
Even Al Lindsey knows that Roberts Stadium still has value and purpose.
Joe Biden is right, Al Lindsey has been doing a good job.
