Kay the Elephant seems to be expressing her displeasure at the stifling heat that permeates the Tri-State each summer. The pachyderm was a longtime resident of Mesker Park Zoo, as well as perhaps its most popular attraction. The zoo had been founded in 1928 after the city accepted an offer of two lions, who were housed in a small cage in Mesker Park across the street from the present zoo grounds. On June 14, 1929, Kay was introduced to local residents in one of the most spectacular parades ever held in Evansville, and she quickly endeared herself to zoo visitors. Kay left Mesker in 1954, and was replaced by Bunny the Elephant later that year.

Elephants in zoos and circuses are disturbing considering the suffering they endure. I have never understood why the human population does not appreciate all other species and give them room on this earth to exist unfettered and free. Humans need to stop reproducing at such a high rate. Believe me, many of them are no bargains and could easily be replaced by other species. This is basic education that should be started at a very young age. Life is a balance and the earth and all species as a whole need to be considered first before making some of the life altering decisions being made in an off-hand manner every day. This topic is so critical and yet most people don’t get it. Makes me crazy!!
