NEWLY RELEASED “YELLOW SUBMARINE” TO BE SCREENED AT
ABBEY ROAD ON THE RIVER
Louisville, Kentucky (May 7, 2012) – Organizers of WHAS-11 Abbey Road on the River have just confirmed they will host five screenings of “Yellow Submarine,” an animated musical fantasy film originally produced in 1968 that has been digitally re-mastered by hand, frame by frame. The eighty-nine minute film will officially be released nationally on May 11th, and it will make its festival premiere on Thursday, May 24th at 8:30pm on the Main Lawn of the Belvedere. Advance tickets are available online for $8 each, children 12 and under are free.
The film is based on the song “Yellow Submarine” written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and was directed by George Dunning and produced by Al Brodax. The soundtrack features fifteen songs that were composed by The Beatles and George Martin. Several additional screenings will be held in the Archibald Ballroom at the Galt House during the festival. Tickets will be available at the door for $6, children 12 and under are free. Festival tickets are not required to attend the screenings throughout the five-day event. More information, show times, and ticket prices can be found at www.arotr.com.
Released in the midst of the psychedelic pop culture of the 1960s, “Yellow Submarine” was a box-office smash, drawing in crowds both for its lush, wildly creative images, and its soundtrack of Beatles songs. At the beginning of the story, Pepperland is introduced by a narrator as a cheerful music-loving paradise under the sea, protected by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The land falls under a surprise attack by the music-hating Blue Meanies, who seal the band inside a music-proof bubble, make the Pepperlanders immobile as statues by throwing loads of big green apples upon them, and drain the countryside of colour. Enter John, Paul, George and Ringo to save the day! Armed with little more than their humor, songs, and of course, their Yellow Submarine, The Beatles tackle the rough seas ahead in an effort to bring down the evil forces of bluedom. At the end, the animation is replaced by live-action with the real Beatles, having returned home, playfully showing off their souvenirs.
Festival producer Gary Jacob commented, “I saw this film for the first time the week it premiered in November 1968. It was groundbreaking animation then and, like everything created by The Beatles, remains relevant today. We are so excited to introduce this film to the thousands of young Beatles fans who come to Abbey Road on the River.”
