University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball announced the signing of 5-foot-10 guard/forward Morgan Sherwood(Charleston, Illinois) to a national letter of intent. Sherwood is the first player to sign with Head Coach Rick Stein’s Screaming Eagles for the 2016-17 season.
Sherwood is currently a senior at Charleston High School in Charleston, Illinois, where she has averaged 20.8 points and 8.4 rebounds through the first five games of the 2015-16 season.
A three-time All-State, All-Conference, and All-Area honoree, Sherwood averaged 20.2 points and 9.7 rebounds per game as a junior in 2014-15 after averaging 15.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest as a sophomore.
Through five games, Sherwood has racked up 1,377 career points, 709 career rebounds, and 132 career blocks.
Her performance has helped lead CHS to a perfect start to the 2015-16 season after the Trojans finished the 2014-15 season with a 23-6 overall record.
In addition to her high school resume, Sherwood played AAU for the Central Illinois Storm. She was a teammate of current USI sophomoresKaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois) and Randa Harshbarger (Philo, Illinois).
“We are excited to have Morgan join our family here at USI,†Stein said. “Morgan is an outstanding athlete that excelled in multiple sports in high school. She has a great understanding of the game and a high basketball IQ.
“Morgan runs the floor well, can drive to the rim, and can shoot from anywhere on the court,†Stein continued. “She rebounds well, is a good passer, and can take her defender into the post for a mismatch. Morgan is a winner on and off the court!â€
USI (6-1, 2-0 GLVC) returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Salem International University at the Physical Activities Center.
