The University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country team settled for a 10th-place finish out of 32 teams at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships Saturday.
Senior Johnnie Guy (Palmyra, Indiana) and junior Noah Lutz (Evansville, Indiana) finished 23rd and 45th, respectively, to lead the Screaming Eagles, who were tied for sixth in the nation heading into the race.
Guy completed the 10-kilometer course in 30 minutes, 14.20 seconds to earn All-America honors for the 12th time in his storied career at USI. His 12 All-America honors are the most of any student-athlete in USI history.
Lutz completed the race in 30:37.8, less than eight seconds away from 40th-place and an All-America honor.
As a team, the Eagles finished with 348 points, 24 points behind ninth-place Cal Poly Pamona.
Junior Josh Guy (Palmyra, Indiana) finished 98th to aid USI, which lost one of its top runners midway through the race when junior Chase Broughton (Marengo, Indiana) took a fall after getting tangled up with a cone.
Sophomores Jesse Stanley (Chandler, Indiana) and Cain Parker (Petersburg, Indiana) finished 115th and 144th, respectively, to round out the Eagles’ top five, while senior Tyler Schickel (Poseyville, Indiana) rounded out USI’s lineup with a 187th-place finish.
Colorado Mines won the team title with 100 points, while Adams State University and the University of Alaska-Anchorage were second and third, respectively. Shorter University’s Alfred Chelanga won the individual title with a time of 29:24.60.
USI opens the Indoor Track & Field season in January.
