Lloyd Winnecke

In a statement to the media Republican candidate for Mayor of Evansville, Lloyd Winnecke has pledged not to close the Lloyd Pool on the north side and to go ahead with the nearly $200,000 in repairs that were recently approved in the City of Evansville’s 2012 budget.

Citing an increase in admissions in 2011 and the importance of maintaining public swimming facilities Mr. Winnecke issued the following statement.

  1. Lloyd Pool is an extremely important recreational facility especially for Northside residents and businesses, and youth in particular. Lloyd Pool is the anchor feature in a small yet highly utilized public sports complex that also includes ball fields, children’s playground equipment, and a natural area of well matured forest.

To close Lloyd Pool would deprive Northsiders in particular, and other Evansville residents and visitors generally, of an important asset with a huge investment in terms of both public funds and sentimental attachment of Northside citizens. I cannot believe that anyone who would be mayor of Evansville would contemplate closing Lloyd Pool.

I want to thank the Evansville City Council and the current administration for including a significant line in the 2012 budget for renovating Lloyd Pool. It needs it, and has needed renovation for a long time. Please keep in mind that one of the major causes of the structural corrosion and general deterioration of the hard components of the building and filtering system is the use of gas chlorine rather than liguid sodium hypochloride in the water purification system. Chlorine gas is cheap on the front end, but extremely expensive when you have to address the damage it causes. Just a suggestion, but you may want to replace the gas system with a liquid chlorine system to protect any investment made in the renovation.

Now, a natatorium at Roberts? What then happens to Harke Pool? Oh well, I won’t go into all that at this time. But I would like to say again, thanks to the City Council and city administration for budgeting the Lloyd Pool rehabilitation. And thanks to Lloyd Winnecke for your support of Northsiders’ interest and attachment to Lloyd Pool and surrounding facilities, all of which are well-loved recreational and economic assets on Evansville’s North Side.

  2. What happens to Hartke, maybe with a Natatorium, then the WHOLE Hartke pool would be open. Hartke hasn’t been that great of a pool in at least 10 years, the kiddie pool has been closed for at least 5 years so the people that live in that community with children have to go to the far westside or elsewhere to take their children to swim. If they have to go to the far westside to Burdette Park, they have to take out a small loan just to get into the pool, let alone if they need to eat anything there. It’s about time to either update Hartke pool or get rid of the eye sore.

  3. In Mr. Winnecke’s next press release, he may pledge not to close the Lloyd Expressway. Not to be outdone, Mr. Davis may quickly pledge not to close either McDonald golf course or W. Franklin Street.
