Before the special session began, I sent out a survey through my e-newsletter to get an idea of my constituents’ thoughts on possible abortion laws in Indiana.
After receiving over 1,400 responses, the consensus was overwhelmingly in opposition to any form of a complete abortion ban.Â
When the special session was convening to discuss Senate Enrolled Act 1Â (ss), I took these responses into account and shared them with my peers. I voted ‘no’ on SEA 1 (ss) to reflect the opinions of the vast majority of my constituents in District 50.
There were many other surveys done that showed similar results, but SEA 1 (ss) still passed through the Indiana General Assembly before being signed into law by the governor.Â
I would like to thank everyone who participated in answering these tough questions. Although this legislation, unfortunately, came to pass, I appreciate the input which helped me greatly in my decision to oppose it.
A summary of each survey question result can be viewed below.

The 1400 responses to Senator Beckers survey represent less than 1% of the District 50 population. That is hardly a mandate to support the killing of unborn children.
Keeping in mind that a survey consists of a representative sample of the populace that cares enough to respond, it looks to me to be a valid outcome, and a clear warning to the politicians who want to keep their jobs.
