USI Softball seventh in region as changes made to weekend slate

University of Southern Indiana Softball debuted at No. 7 in the first NCAA Division II Midwest Region rankings.

The Screaming Eagles (24-17, 12-8 GLVC) are currently 18-14 against the Midwest Region after splitting a doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan College Tuesday night.

Great Lakes Valley Conference schools represented five of the 10 teams, with the University of Illinois Springfield and University of Indianapolis sitting at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. McKendree University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Grand Valley State University was ranked first in the region, while fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference members Saginaw Valley State University and Ashland University were ranked No. 6 and No. 9, respectively.

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference was represented by No. 8 Cedarville University and No. 10 Ohio Dominican University.

USI returns to action Friday at noon when it travels to Springfield, Missouri, to take on Drury University in a GLVC doubleheader. Friday’s games were originally scheduled for Sunday, but heavy rain in the Springfield area Sunday forced the games to be moved up.

The Eagles also visit Missouri University of Science & Technology for a conference twinbill Saturday at noon in Rolla, Missouri.
