Obituary for Janie Eloise Overdorf

Janie Eloise Overdorf, 93, of Newburgh, passed away on July 22, 2019 at Deaconess Gateway. Born July 28, 1925, to Latta and Mary Viola (Richardson) Ireland in Iredello County, North Carolina, she was one of ten children. She was married to James Overdorf for 64 years.

Eloise was a long-time member of the Hamilton and Vanderburgh County Women’s Extension clubs. She was also a member of Centenary United Methodist and Fishers United Methodist churches. She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed quilting, knitting and making clothes for her children and grandchildren. Eloise worked at Bayers Button Shop and was co-owner of the Old Sewing Shop. She also enjoyed baking especially at Christmas-time, making pies, cookies and bread. She enjoyed her independence, and in her later years was a thrill seeker. She rode around the storied 2.5 mile oval and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the age of 78. At 87, she completed tandem skydiving and at the age of 90, she rode a horse for the first time in her life.
She was preceded in death by eight of her siblings; her husband James Overdorf; daughter-in-law, Merridene Overdorf; and granddaughter, Ann Knight. She is survived by her sister, Jackie Hawkins; her sister-in-law, Marcella Moore; her children Rand Overdorf, Rick (Loan) Overdorf, Kathryn (Michael) Knight, Mary Ann (William) Madauss; and her grandchildren, Susan (Matt) Sienna, Jason (Shaliaja) Overdorf, Alison (Aim) Madauss, Whitney (Michael) Kealy, Ricki (Derek) Gibson, and Thy Overdorf. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 26, 2019 from 2:00 – 6:00 pm at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. Graveside services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Indianapolis, Indiana with Reverend Danny Walker officiating.
