Vanderburgh County lawmakers seek applicants for paid Statehouse internship:
Vanderburgh County lawmakers invite local college students and recent graduates to apply for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program, which takes place during the 2020 legislative session at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.Local legislators seeking interns include State Reps. Matt Hostettler (R-Fort Branch), Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) and Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville).

Hostettler said local college and graduate students, and recent graduates should apply before Oct. 31. “Our community is home to many talented individuals who would make excellent candidates for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program,” Hostettler said. “The skills gained during the experience are invaluable as students prepare to enter Indiana’s competitive job market. Spots fill up fast so apply as soon as possible.”

According to Sullivan, the internship program is a unique opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience and apply skills in a real-world setting. She said the paid internship is full-time and takes place during the spring semester. “Don’t miss this exciting chance to meet and work with the legislators and staff this legislative session,” Sullivan said. “I encourage all local students and recent graduates to apply. As an intern, they will develop a professional network and gain valuable skills that will propel them in their careers all while getting paid.”

McNamara said internship positions are open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. Students can apply for internships in a variety of areas, focusing on legislative operations, communications and media relations, policy or fiscal policy. “I see firsthand how this program prepares students for success, whether in government or the private sector,” McNamara said. “If you or someone you know is interested in public service, public relations or media, please apply as soon as possible.”

According to McNamara, these positions are full-time, Monday through Friday, lasting from January through mid-March. Interns receive biweekly compensation of $750, and can earn academic credit through their college or university. She said interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

(From August 30,2019 Senate Update)
OB Navigator Program Launches with Road Shows:
It’s an unfortunate reality that Indiana ranks No. 7 in the nation for the highest infant mortality rate. In an effort to reduce the number of infant deaths in the state, I supported House Enrolled Act 1007 in 2019, which created the OB Navigator Program to help pregnant women connect with health care services, such as home visiting programs.

Under the new law, providers must verbally screen all pregnant patients for substance-abuse disorders and provide them with treatment. In the coming months, the Indiana State Department of Health will hold a series of 12 public events around the state to highlight the program, having recently kicked off the tour with the first of their road shows at Ivy Tech Community College.

This program begins to address Indiana’s infant mortality rate by ensuring mothers and their children receive the best care possible, and I hope to see this new initiative have a positive impact on Hoosier families.
