ST. MARY’S BREAST CENTER IS EXCITED  TO SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY

 St. Mary’s Mobile Digital Mammography is coming to your community soon. St. Mary’s is the only facility in Evansville and the only Tri-State hospital to offer mobile digital mammography. Digital pictures can be magnified, adjusted and previewed to see certain areas that regular film cannot. There are fewer retakes and sharper images. Digital mammograms use less radiation, making them safer for patients.  All screenings include mammograms and education about breast health and early detection of breast cancer.

Participants must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • You must be between 35 to 40 years old to receive your baseline (or initial) mammogram.
  • Annual mammograms should begin at age 40.
  • It must have been at least one year since your last mammogram.
  • Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance are accepted.
  • Assistance is available for those who qualify.

St. Mary’s received the “Sharing the Vision: Early Detection of Breast Cancer” grant from the Greater Evansville Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation, and the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust “Power of  Hope” grant,  which helps fund the screenings.

Road Hearing 2015 Reminder

Reminder: The Board of Commissioners of Vanderburgh County will conduct an annual road hearing on Tuesday, April 21st following the County Commissioners meeting at 5:00 pm in room 301 of the Civic Center, 1 NW MLK Blvd. Please note that there will be no Drainage Board Meeting following the regular Board of Commissioners meeting on this date.

This public forum will provide citizens with information on road projects scheduled for 2015 and allow citizens to identify specific county roads to be included in the 2015 paving list.

Residents who wish to address the Board with specific road concerns or suggestions are asked to contact the County Commissioners office prior to April 14th so the issue can be investigated prior to the meeting. The Commissioners Office can be reached at 435-5241 between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm or you can email your concerns or suggestions to commissioners@vanderburghgov.org.

OUTREACH MINISTRIES TO HOLD 3RD ANNUAL CHEESECAKE FOR CHARIT

Outreach Ministries will hold its 3rd Annual “CHEESECAKE FOR CHARITY” fundraising event Friday, APRIL 24th at 7:00 p.m. at VECTREN on the riverfront ` downtown Evansville. All proceeds will benefit the working poor in the Evansville area.

CHEESECAKE FOR CHARITY will include Ron Rhodes as our Emcee, music by Monte Skelton; John Jenkins as our Auctioneer.  There will be delectable hors d’oeuvres, a cash wine bar, both live and silent auctions, and luscious unlimited cheesecake samples from a local baker. Cheesecakes by Krista will make your taste buds sing. Flavors will include one-of-a-kind gourmet cheesecakes, such as, Orange Dream Cycle, Turtle, Mocha, Lemon Blueberry, Chocolate Covered Berry, and many more.

The live auction will feature items such as: French Lick Trip, Jewelry, Tracy Zeller Jewelry, incredible Artwork, A Longhorn Skull decorated, Hand carved solid Cherry wood Mirror, 101 Yoga, and much more.  The Silent Auction will feature items such as Jewelry, Dukane Spa package, Golf Packages, and memberships, etc.

As a partner of United Way of Southwestern Indiana, we pool resources with other agencies in an attempt to meet the needs of the whole family.  The mission of Outreach Ministries is to be a compassionate resource for families in crisis by providing emergency assistance and referrals, to help positively impact their futures. In 2014, Outreach Ministries served more than 10,000 individuals and 3,300 families – providing assistance with rent, utilities, prescriptions, eye exams, and transportation.  Education is idyllic for change and resource education is a large part of our program.

 

EVSC ESL Program Sponsors Festival of Nations

The English as a Second Language Program, along with Bosse High School, is planning its multicultural event Festival of Nations on April 16, from 6-8 p.m.  The event is sponsored by a grant from the Public Education Foundation and is free and open to the public.

The event will take place in the Bosse High School cafeteria and is designed to be a place where EVSC students, representing 33 different languages and countries, will come to connect with the community — sharing their culture, dance, songs, games, etc…

A variety of vendors are also planned to have samples of food and other artifacts available for viewing. They include:  Qdoba Mexican Grill, Mnna Mediterranean Grill, Acropolis, Taj Mahal, Taste of India, Exotic Eyebrows Threading Salon, and River City Food Co-op.

New funding sought for LGBT Map Evansville project

Dr. Amie McKibban, associate professor of psychology at the University of Southern Indiana, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to provide continued support for Map Evansville, a web-based community asset map and directory which measures area businesses’ inclusivity of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) customers and employees in Evansville and surrounding communities.

The project was initiated by McKibban in 2014 and received grant support from USI’s College of Liberal Arts and Outreach and Engagement, as well as support from other USI and community sponsors. With grant funding expired, McKibban’s goal is to raise $4,439 to sustain the site through 2017, with a long-range goal of supporting the project through corporate sponsorships.

The website directory quickly outgrew current software after Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). Participating businesses more than doubled. McKibban plans to upgrade current software to allow for expansion of the project and to develop a mobile app. “We have a large LGBT population here who have a lot of allies, friends and family members,” said McKibban. “They want to know they can walk into a business and feel comfortable, be treated fairly and are supported.”

While businesses and organizations in the Map Evansville directory receive a sticker that can be displayed, this project differs from many of the other sticker campaigns developed in reaction to the RFRA. “We really want to know you are a business that supports everyone, and we also want to know you actively work toward inclusion,” said McKibban. In order to be included, businesses and organizations fill out assessments to measure their level of inclusivity of the LGBT community.

IS IT TRUE we have attached a report dated 2-13-15 from the State Board of Accounts that clearly indicates that the Evansville Utility Department has $395,176 dollars of Cash unaccounted for as of December 31, 2013? …this report was seemly delayed by SBOA from going public until February 13, 2015? …we wonder why it took SBOA over 14 plus months from the discovery date to make this information public?

IS IT TRUE a report posted on the State Board of Accounts website on 2-13-15 concerning the Evansville Water and Sewer Utilities bank account? …SBOA Department Examination Result and Comment section made the following reference on the Evansville Water and Sewer Utilities Bank Account Reconciliations posted below?

BANK ACCOUNT RECONCILIATIONS

Water and Wastewater cash and investment fund balances, including City funds, were not properly reconciled to bank balances. The difference between the reconciled bank balance reported by the Utilities and City combined and the fund ledger balance was $395,157 cash short at December 31, 2013.

Errors noted on the Utilities’ and City’s combined reconcilement included:

1. One bank account was not included in the City’s bank reconcilement.

2. The wrong balances from some of the bank statements were used in the City’s reconcilement. In some cases, the December 31, 2013 bank balance was not used for reconcilement.

3. Transactions were not posted or were not posted properly to the fund.

As a result of incomplete and inaccurate reconcilements, improper accounting for cash and investments and incorrect postings to the records remained undiscovered.

In addition, prior to 2012, most cash and investments of the Water and Wastewater Utilities were accounted for in the City’s bank account. During 2012, separate bank accounts were established; however, the exact cash and investment balance of each Utility was not transferred to the new bank accounts at that time. Some of the cash and investment balances were transferred to the new bank accounts during 2013, but there still was an amount remaining to be transferred as of the date of this report. The City should determine the exact amount due to each Utility and transfer the balances to the appropriate bank accounts.

Indiana Code 5-13-6-1(e) states: “All local investment officers shall reconcile at least monthly the balance of public funds, as disclosed by the records of the local officers, with the balance statements provided by the respective depositories.”

At all times, the manual and/or computerized records, subsidiary ledgers, control ledger, and reconciled bank balance should agree. If the reconciled bank balance is less than the subsidiary or control ledgers, then the responsible official or employee may be held personally responsible for the amount needed to balance the fund. (Accounting and Uniform Compliance Guidelines Manual for Cities and Towns, Chapter 7)

Governor Pence Urges Congressional Delegation to Support Trade Promotion Authority and Trade Agreements

Indianapolis – In a letter sent to members of the Indiana Congressional Delegation today, Governor Mike Pence urged them to support Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation, as well as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).  TPA legislation is expected to be introduced and considered in Congress later this year, clearing a path forward for future consideration of TPP and TTIP.

 

“As you know, my administration has made job growth job number one.  We passed the largest state tax cut in Indiana history, lowered the corporate income tax, reduced the regulatory burden, and have taken numerous other measures to improve the business environment and the education and workforce skills of Hoosiers,” Governor Pence wrote. “Those are things we can do at home, but reducing tariffs and other trade barriers so that Indiana businesses can enjoy increased market access and fairly compete on the world stage is something that Congress must do.  I encourage your support for Trade Promotion Authority, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and any other trade-related measures when they are brought before the Congress for consideration.”

 

Japan is Indiana’s largest Asian trading partner, with the Hoosier state exporting $1.6 billion in goods to Japan in 2014.  Exports to Germany, Indiana’s largest European partner, were similarly valued at $1.6 billion in 2014.  According to the Department of Commerce, total Indiana goods exports around the world were a record $35.5 billion in 2014, with $20.1 billion of that amount being exported to TPP countries and $8.2 billion to TTIP nations.  According to the Business Roundtable, from 2004-2013 employment related to trade grew nearly ten times as fast as total employment in Indiana. The Department of Commerce reports that jobs in export related industries pay approximately 18 percent more than jobs in non-export related industries.
