Governor Pence Announces State Receives Full Reimbursement of Incentives Issued to Carrier, UTEC

0

Funds Will Be Used to Provide Employee Training Assistance

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence announced today that UTC Climate, Controls & Security has repaid state training grants issued by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) to Carrier Corporation and United Technologies Electronic Controls (UTEC), which total more than $380,000. These funds will be redeposited into the IEDC’s Skills Enhancement Fund, which provides assistance to businesses to support training and upgrading skills of employees.

“While I was extremely disappointed with Carrier and UTEC’s decision to relocate manufacturing operations and Hoosier jobs to Mexico, I appreciate their commitment to repay state and local incentives as they promised when I met with them last month,” said Governor Mike Pence. “My administration has made it a top priority to support the employees, their loved ones and the communities affected by this decision and to protect Hoosier taxpayers. Today, I am pleased to announce that these companies have repaid state and local incentives, and I thank Carrier and UTEC for following through on the commitment they made to the state of Indiana.”

On March 2, Governor Pence met with UTC Climate, Controls & Security President Robert McDonough to express his concerns and outline the state’s expectations of the company to ensure support for Carrier and UTEC employees. The company committed to each item proposed, which include:

Maintaining operations at or near current employee levels for the next three years.

  • Maintaining its corporate headquarters for Carrier Corporation and UTEC in Indianapolis and Huntington, respectively, retaining 400 high-wage jobs in Indiana.
  • Reimbursing the state of Indiana for all active training grants issued.
  • Reimbursing all local incentives to both Indianapolis and Huntington.
  • Coordinating with the Department of Workforce Development to support workforce assistance efforts.
  • Offering severance packages and education stipends to all displaced employees.

“As a state, Indiana has worked tirelessly to create a pro-growth business climate and today more Hoosiers are going to work than ever before in our state’s 200-year history,” said Pence. “I am confident that this trend of new investment and job creation will continue because the benefits of doing business in the Hoosier state are clear. We remain committed to ensuring quality jobs for all Hoosiers, and these reimbursed funds will used to further support our hardworking Hoosiers, who remain Indiana’s greatest asset.”

The University of Evansville Women’s Tennis Team (7-13, 0-1) will begin a busy weekend on Friday when they play host to Indiana Wesleyan at 3:00 P.M. CST or 6:00 P.M. CST depending on the weather. If the match is outside it will be played at Wesselman Park and if it is indoors it will be played at Tri-State Athletic Club. The Aces will then continue conference play with matches this weekend at Illinois State on Saturday and at Bradley on Sunday. The match against the Redbirds is slated for a 1:00 P.M. CST start and the match against the Braves is slated for a 10:00 A.M. CST start.

Evansville is coming off their conference opener this past weekend when they traveled to Southern Illinois to take on the Salukis. SIU was able to defeat the Aces by a score of 7-0.

Head Coach Jayson Wiseman said on the match, “This was just another tough loss and definitely not how we wanted to start out MVC schedule. Give all the credit to SIU, their team came ready to play and won almost every key point. We had some very close matches but SIU just out executed us today. Our team is resilient and will be ready to play next week. Hopefully we will have our line up at full strength with three matches scheduled for next week.”

Indiana Wesleyan, a NAIA school, comes into the match on Friday with a record of 24-5. They have also won two out of their last three with their last win coming over Campbellsville. The Redbirds of Illinois State enter Saturdays match with a record of 10-7 with a 1-0 mark in conference play. Their first conference win was a 5-2 victory over Bradley. Bradley currently has a record of 9-9, with their most recent match being their loss to Illinois State.

On April 16th the Aces will play host to Drake. This will mark their first home conference match of the year. They will follow that up with a home match against UNI the next day.

Recent Report shows Evansville Region Helping to Boost Indiana’s Manufacturing Value

0

According to a national report, Evansville metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is one of the nation’s leaders in Gross Regional Product (GRP) per worker for manufacturing. As the 28th most productive MSA out of 381 U.S. metro areas, the Evansville MSA generates $224,030 in value for each manufacturing job in the region.

The March/April report produced by Atlanta-based Garner Economics utilizing data from the U.S. Bureaus of Labor Statistics (BLS) and Economic Analysis (BEA), the Evansville MSA creates significantly more economic value in manufacturing than better perceived manufacturing centers in Indiana such as Elkhart, Ft. Wayne, Kokomo and Columbus. In fact, the numbers are not even close. The Evansville region has a higher value for each manufacturing job as well than much larger U.S. metros such as Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Memphis and San Diego.

“When it comes to manufacturing productivity, the Evansville metro is one of the true leaders in the country,” said Greg Wathen, President & CEO for the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana. “While companies can manufacturer products almost anywhere, productivity matters when it comes to probability.”

The Garner Economics analysis results also closely mirror the recent Indiana Community Vitality Index released by the Indiana University Public Policy Institute as part of their Thriving Communities, Thriving State initiative.

The IU Public Policy Institute study states that “Central Indiana (Indianapolis area) and Evansville anchor areas of strength for Indiana’s economy; supporting these regions to compete nationally will continue to be important for Indiana’s economic well-being.”

According to the IU study, the Evansville and Indianapolis regions along with Ft. Wayne and South Bend represent 63 percent of all jobs in Indiana making it imperative to think regionally when crafting state economic policy.
